The TJX Companies, Inc. is seeking a Sustainable Packaging Manager for their Marlborough, MA location. This hybrid role focuses on advancing the company's environmental sustainability initiatives, particularly in packaging. Responsibilities include developing sustainable packaging strategies, establishing internal processes, collaborating with external partners, and providing support to internal teams. The position requires two days a week on-site, emphasizing the importance of in-person collaboration.

We focus our efforts in four areas: climate and energy, responsible waste management, chemicals management, and responsible material sourcing. We are making great progress in all these areas and to further accelerate our initiatives have an opportunity for a Sustainable Packaging Manager!
This key role will support TJX’s Environmental Sustainability program, with a focus on achievement of TJX’s goal to transition 100% of packaging for products developed in-house by our product design team to sustainable packaging. This will include development of milestones plans, setting of material transition standard, supporting in IT system requirement definition, and providing expertise and guidance to business partners. It is a hybrid position requiring 2 days a week on-site at our Marlborough, MA location.
What You Will Do:
Sustainable Packaging Strategy Development
• Set and refine internal standards, definitions, policies at TJX
• Keep a pulse on industry trends, constantly seeking out best practices and benchmark against peers as well as industry associations
• Responsible for the measurement of progress against public facing goals, conduct ongoing research and data analysis to support and expand TJX’s sustainable packaging goals & sourcing strategy
• Review and assess the potential of using new sustainable materials and/or certification entities
Establish & Refine Internal Process and Technology Roadmap
• Partner with key internal stakeholders to drive the implementation of TJX’s packaging sustainability initiatives, including the development of processes, training tools, tracking mechanisms
• Support in the creation of an internal strategy around technology and systems for the tracking and reporting of progress against packaging goals
• Provide subject matter expertise and content for training materials to educate internal teams around best practices, insights, and peer benchmarking findings
Collaborate with External Partners
• Collaborate closely with key internal partners and external stakeholders, including vendors, industry collaborations and subject matter specific organizations.
• Evaluate new standards, certifications, and material types for adoption
• Manage relationship with standard setting bodies, peer collaborations, and organizations
Provide support to TJX Internal Partners
• Support Global Communications team with external reporting such as Corporate Responsibility report and website content updates, support other internal and external communications as necessary
• Participate on cross functional teams for new program rollout and existing program enhancement as needed
• Provide expert guidance, as required, to internal Product Development, Packaging Design, and Merchandising business partners on work related to product packaging decisions
Who We Are Looking For: You
• 5+ years’ experience in sustainable packaging engineering or design
• Minimum 3 years retail industry or CPG experience collaborating with consumer packaging
• Proven experience developing a packaging transition strategy from concept to implementation
• Advanced computer skills including full MS 365 suite, with expert PowerPoint presentation development and delivery
• Strong working knowledge of packaging sustainability issues and trends, including external reporting frameworks and best practices
• Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaboration focused team environment
• Comfort and prior proven experience working in a role that required ground up development of strategy, methodology, roles, governance, etc.
• Strong problem-solving abilities with a solutions-oriented mindset
• Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Technology, or related field required. Graduate degree in related sustainability field preferred
