Home Innovation Research Labs is seeking a Sustainable Building Scientist in Upper Marlboro, MD, to support the NGBS Green certification program. The role involves creating and reviewing building energy models, ensuring compliance with energy performance standards, providing technical assistance, and analyzing building codes. Candidates should have knowledge of building science, energy modeling software, and sustainability principles, along with a relevant engineering degree.
Sustainable Building Scientist
Home Innovation is looking for someone to support the NGBS Green certification program based on the National Green Building Standard ICC - 700 and other high-performance building programs. NGBS Green certification focuses on the design, construction, and certification of high-performance buildings from structural, durability, energy, and water performance standpoints.
The successful candidate will provide building energy performance expertise and oversee the certification programs’ stringent QA system. The preferred candidate will be comfortable creating and reviewing building energy models for homes and multifamily buildings, writing program policies and procedures, providing technical assistance to our clients, auditing building inspections, and analyzing building codes and standards.
This position is based at Home Innovation’s Upper Marlboro, MD headquarters.
Responsibilities:
• Create and review building energy models that meet industry standards for code compliance, as well as for above-code residential programs such as ENERGY STAR, RESNET, LEED, and NGBS Green.
• Understand national, state, and city local building and performance codes.
• Review energy performance modeling performed by others for residential and multifamily buildings.
• Support customers, project managers, and field technicians to comply with energy efficiency programs.
• Provide technical assistance and guidance on code and energy program standards and regulations.
• Work with research and design engineers to simulate the energy performance of new and existing buildings to propose cost-effective energy conservation measures.
• Analyze the energy performance of new construction and existing facilities to determine cost-effective energy measures and efficiency for NGBS compliance.
• Prepare, review, and QA reports containing energy modeling results and recommendations for energy savings.
• Review and compare standards, regulations, and code requirements to prepare detailed technical reports on compliance.
Qualifications:
• Knowledge of engineering and building science principles applicable to residential construction.
• Knowledge of one or more of the following: structural performance, energy performance, moisture performance, durability, construction materials.
• Practical knowledge of residential building technologies, construction processes, and industry trends
• Demonstrated knowledge of energy modeling for residential buildings
• Experience using energy modeling software (EQuest, Open Studio, EnergyPlus, Carrier HAP, Energy Pro, VE, Ekotrope, and REM Rate)
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
• Superior client management, relationship building, and collaboration abilities
• Knowledge of sustainability principles and green rating systems
• Knowledge of building codes and design standards
• Experience with data acquisition systems
• Adept in Data Analysis and visual presentation skills
Education:
BS Mechanical/Electrical/Civil/Architectural/Structural Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge and Experience:
• Demonstrates a good grasp of knowledge and principles of the field of specialization.
• Successfully applies knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of the area of specialization.
• Typically, 2+ years of successful experience in a related field and successful demonstration of Responsibilities and Qualifications as presented above.
