The City of Durham is seeking a Sustainability and Energy Analyst to support its Sustainability & Energy Management program. The role involves implementing sustainability initiatives, managing projects, and collaborating with stakeholders to enhance community efforts. The job is primarily in Durham, NC, with a hybrid schedule available, indicating some in-office presence is necessary.

The General Services Department is seeking a skilled and highly motivated Sustainability and Energy Analyst to join its Sustainability & Energy Management program located within the Arts, Culture, and Sustainable Communities Division.

Position Description
The Sustainability and Energy Analyst will support implementation of the City’s Strategic Plan, specifically Goal 5: Thriving and Vibrant Environment. The Sustainability Analyst will gather, support, evaluate, educate, organize and report on organization and community-wide sustainability and climate efforts, including social and racial equity, resilience, renewable energy, energy efficiency, electrification of fleet and buildings, innovation, and more, playing a critical role in the success of sustainability efforts to benefit the Durham community and its 285,000+ residents.
The successful candidate is detail-oriented, organized and a highly skilled project manager poised to create and support processes and workflow, manage contracts and budgets, develop policies and procedures, research and compile statistics and information, conduct outreach, education and training, and collaborate with stakeholders to facilitate partnerships to successfully implement strategic plan goals. A keen focus on achieving results and outcomes based on agreed-upon goals and priorities is required.
• Supports SEM team in organizational, administrative and departmental requirements, coordinating collaborative workflows and establishing deadlines with staff: including City Council meeting submissions; work plan updates; budgeting; monitoring expenditures; organizing annual data, reporting and performance metrics; Environmental Advisory Board meeting support; managing the team’s website; maintaining and updating spreadsheets; providing consistent progress and update reports to Manager;
• Assists with project management and working group facilitation for energy and climate programs including energy efficiency and decarbonization of buildings, renewable energy projects, electric vehicle infrastructure and other related projects and programs;
• Coordinates with internal City departments and stakeholders to further operationalize and institutionalize sustainable management practices across City operations, with an emphasis on ensuring accurate and robust data collection;
• Supports and collaborates on community-facing decarbonization and resilience program design, development, analysis, and metrics development and tracking in collaboration with the SEM team and other stakeholders;
• Supports Energy Manager in developing a process for working with facility managers and other staff to share energy use information, identify issues, and make improvements
• Provides support for communications, education, outreach and website;
• Provides technical and organizational support; assists with the implementation of complex and significant climate initiatives;
• Creates and maintains various key performance indicators for annual, quarterly, and by request updates and reporting. Maintains a database of climate action implementation metrics
• Uses data to identify areas for improvement and to facilitate solutions; data analysis for projects such as utilities data; developing new data and performance metrics for projects
• Supports department by utilizing effective and professional communication and project management skills to ensure deadlines are met by scheduling and assigning tasks for collaborative projects and programs; and expediting work results
• Accelerates tasks and deadlines assigned to other staff and partners, creating project management timelines and workflows, and driving results through accountability and consistent communication
• Assists with energy management, tracking, and analysis
• Shares knowledge of sustainability, climate, equity, resilience principles and concepts
• Performs data tracking and analysis; use analytical and statistical tools, and create visualizations with large data sets
• Remains flexible, adaptable and positive in a fast paced and ever-changing environment
• Collaborates and coordinates with multiple stakeholders and oversees timely delivery of program deliverables and outcomes
• Create processes and identifies actions and tasks to tackle complex projects, often with incomplete information and while managing multiple and shifting priorities and stakeholders
• Synthesizes complex ideas and communicates them in an understandable way to others, both written and orally
• Establishes constructive and effective working relationships with employees at every level of the organization
• Supports and completes various duties, ranging from administrative tasks to technical complex projects
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, sustainability or directly related field.
• Two years of professional program administration and/or analytical experience in area of assignment.
• Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
• Ability to demonstrate MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe software proficiency.
• Ability to demonstrate understanding of local government administration, finance, and procurement.
• Ability to demonstrate understanding of grant administration and management.
• Master’s degree in environmental science, engineering, data analytics, sustainability or directly related field.
• Certification in project management, process improvement, organizational skills, Lean Six Sigma or equivalent.
• Sustainability related certification such as: Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP); Certified Energy Manager (CEM); Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP); Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional (CLEP); Certified Sustainable Development Professional (CSDP); Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED AP); Professional Energy Manager (PEM); OR equivalent certification
