SWACO is seeking a Sustainability Programs Manager in Columbus, OH, to lead a team in implementing waste reduction, recycling, and composting initiatives. The role involves developing innovative projects, managing budgets, and collaborating with communities. Candidates should have 5-10 years of relevant experience and a degree in a related field. Responsibilities include supervising staff, enhancing program performance, and representing SWACO at public events.

We're seeking a passionate and results-oriented Sustainability Programs Manager to join our dynamic Innovation and Programs Department. In this vital role, you'll be a key player in shaping the future of waste reduction, recycling, and composting in our region.
You'll supervise a dedicated and energetic team of 9 professionals who implement over 60 different programs and projects related to waste reduction, recycling, and composting. You’ll provide leadership and support to ensure the successful implementation of programs that make a real difference in the 41communities, 16 school districts, and thousands of businesses and non-profit organizations that are located in Central Ohio.
The ideal candidate will have at least 5 – 10 years of relevant experience developing and managing programs related to waste reduction, recycling, and composting. The candidate will also have extensive experience of developing staff, working with communities, managing budgets, and providing leadership.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide support and guidance to department staff in the development and implementation of programs and projects, monitoring and documenting work results.
• Enhance efforts to divert, recycle, and reuse waste through SWACO's programs, aligning with the SWACO Solid Waste Management Plan.
• Cultivate and introduce innovative ideas and strategies for reducing solid waste, including zero-waste initiatives.
• Seek and introduce innovative projects and partnerships to expand SWACO's impact.
• Actively participate in internal and external committees and meetings related to designated programs.
• Collaborate with partnering organizations to effectively implement and manage joint programs and initiatives.
• Represent SWACO at various public relations and community outreach events.
• Provide technical assistance to communities, businesses, and other organizations in developing waste reduction programs.
• Develop, monitor, and manage budgets for projects and the Innovation and Programs Department.
• Evaluate program performance, identify local and national trends, and explore opportunities for program enhancement.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Supervise a team of approximately nine direct reports.
• Perform all supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and relevant local, state, and federal laws.
• Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training new employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; conducting performance reviews; motivating and developing employees; addressing employee concerns and resolving issues; ensuring work quality; and assisting with troubleshooting and project development.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree or higher in business management, environmental policy, environmental management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 7+ years of experience managing waste diversion or environmental programs and staff.
• Proven experience in recycling, composting, and waste diversion is essential.
• Excellent public speaking and communication skills (written and verbal).
• Previous management experience is required.
• Prior experience working in the public sector is highly preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
• In-depth knowledge of solid waste diversion programs (waste reduction, recycling, and composting), program management, supervision, interviewing, public relations, and public agencies.
• Ability to effectively respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
• Proven ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with the team, government agencies, and the public through effective communication.
• Demonstrated skills in project management, budgeting, and contract administration.
• Ability to analyze situations, define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products (Excel, Outlook, Word, Access, and PowerPoint).

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $102,024.00 - $112,000.00 per year
