Job Description

Fairfax County seeks a Sustainability Program Manager to lead sustainability projects and outreach for its Solid Waste Management Program. The role involves managing programs, engaging with the community, overseeing staff, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. The position is focused on promoting zero waste and sustainability initiatives within Virginia's largest county and requires expertise in solid waste management.

Fairfax County’s Solid Waste Management Program (SWMP) seeks a manager who is highly motivated, brings enthusiasm, and has direct sustainability or solid waste expertise. Leads agency sustainability projects and outreach and engagement programming. This position is an industry leader in sustainability, zero waste, and oversees SWMP Sustainability staff. Serves as the department point of contact for outreach and sustainability issues, represents the SWMP on County teams and serves as the agency’s lead on zero waste, sustainability, and outreach.

Develops and manages sustainability, zero waste, and outreach programs for SWMP. Leads sustainability projects and programs within the community. Oversees training and education opportunities for compliance with county, state, and federal law regulations including but not limited to sustainability, engagement, recycling, composting, and etc. Maintains statistical and budgetary records pertaining to the agency's outreach and sustainability programs. Engages in community, both commercial and residential, outreach and develops solid waste outreach guidelines, style guides, and copy. Aids in developing and maintaining SWMP’s social media presence and coordinates with Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) Public Information Officer for distribution and messaging.
