About the position
The Sustainability Director at 11th Hour Racing Inc. is a pivotal role responsible for leading the design and execution of the organization's sustainability strategy. This position is integral to driving impactful projects across various initiatives, including sponsorships, grants, ambassadors, and storytelling efforts. The Sustainability Director will oversee a diverse range of activities, from collaborating with sailing teams and regattas to managing large-scale public events and partnerships within the marine industry. The role is essential in ensuring that all sustainability initiatives align with the broader objectives of 11th Hour Racing, promoting strategic and effective practices that resonate with the organization's mission of fostering healthier ocean systems. In this full-time, onsite position based in Newport, RI, the Sustainability Director will report directly to the President. The ideal candidate will be a proactive and energetic leader, serving as a strategic thought partner with a deep understanding of sustainability principles. This role requires the ability to provide critical advice and oversight, ensuring that all actions, policies, and plans are practical and adhere to best practices. Additionally, the role involves establishing key performance indicators to track progress and conducting research to stay updated on emerging trends in sustainability and environmental conservation.
Responsibilities
• Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability strategy aligned with 11th Hour Racing's mission and objectives.

• Cultivate and manage a portfolio of strategic partnerships with stakeholders across the sailing, maritime, and environmental communities.

• Lead sustainability initiatives within 11th Hour Racing's projects, ensuring seamless integration of sustainable practices and adherence to environmental standards.

• Serve as the principal sustainability expert for the organization, overseeing internal sustainability practices and those of its sibling organizations.

• Manage existing and develop new sustainability initiatives, including establishing deliverables, tracking progress, and overseeing project budgets.

• Collaborate with the Communications Team to develop educational materials, workshops, and campaigns to raise awareness about critical sustainability issues.

• Represent 11th Hour Racing at conferences, seminars, and speaking engagements, sharing expertise and advocating for the organization's mission.

• Collaborate closely with internal teams across departments to integrate sustainability principles into all aspects of 11th Hour Racing's work.

• Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress toward sustainability goals and prepare regular reports for internal and external stakeholders.

• Conduct research to stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in sustainability and environmental conservation.
Requirements
• Passion for the mission of 11th Hour Racing and a commitment to sustainable practices within the sailing and maritime industries.

• Extensive knowledge and expertise in sustainability principles, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

• Experience with relevant sustainability frameworks such as ISO 20121 and GRI Standards is a plus.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.

• Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

• Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet deadlines with attention to detail.

• Experience working independently and as part of a team, with a high level of self-motivation.

• Ability to work legally in the United States.

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Marine Affairs, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.

• Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in the sustainability field, focusing on the maritime industry or environmental advocacy.
