Job Description

The City of Moab is seeking a Sustainability Coordinator to support its renewable energy and water conservation goals through the implementation of a Sustainability Action Plan. The role involves researching best practices, collaborating with city departments, managing projects, and engaging with the community. Candidates should have relevant education and experience, along with strong skills in project management, communication, and sustainability practices.
General Purpose

The City of Moab established ambitious renewable energy and water conservation goals and subsequently adopted a Sustainability Action Plan addressing energy and buildings, nature and ecosystems, land use and planning, transportation, materials management, and water in City operations and throughout the community.

The Sustainability Coordinator supports the creation and implementation of strategies to meet those goals by researching best practices, engaging with stakeholders, and managing sustainability projects. The position requires a proactive, collaborative, and detail-oriented individual with a passion for addressing challenges and supporting innovative solutions.
Reporting Relationships

Supervision Received: The Sustainability Coordinator reports to the Strategic Initiatives and Sustainability Director or designee of the City Manager.

Essential Functions
• Researches and executes sustainability-related priorities in the City's plans.
• Collaborates across City departments to create, prioritize, and implement sustainability strategies to meet the City's sustainability goals.
• Calculates, tracks, and evaluates program metrics for effectiveness, including regular updates to the greenhouse gas inventory.
• Supports periodic updates to the City's plans.
• Completes sustainability-related reports and assessments.
• Seeks funding for grant-eligible projects.
• Assists with sustainability related City code amendments, in coordination with Planning.
• Implements and reviews aspects of sustainability-related codes, such as outdoor lighting, landscaping, and indoor water conservation.
• Serves as staff liaison to relevant boards and committees.
• Collaborates with community members and organizations on sustainability-related partnerships.
• Works with City staff to create and distribute advertising and public relations materials to representative populations.
• Maintains and updates sustainability-related content on the City's website and other communication channels.
• Organizes community outreach and education efforts, including events and workshops.
• Represents the City's sustainability programs the community.
• Conducts and interprets analyses on the impact of education and outreach strategies.
• Engages with professional organizations to stay abreast of sustainability best practices.
Education and Experience
• Associate degree in sustainability, public administration, urban planning, environmental sciences, or related field, and
• Two (2) or more years of relevant experience, or
• An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The Sustainability Coordinator must be able to:
• Exhibit technical knowledge of one or more relevant sectors: climate science, energy, buildings, ecosystems, planning, transportation, materials management, and water.
• Read and analyze technical information and formulate practical solutions.
• Manage disparate projects concurrently, involving inter-and intradepartmental members as well as contractors.
• Interface effectively with residents, the city council, community organizations, and other government entities.
• Demonstrate excellence in written, oral, and presentation skills.
• Work independently yet collaboratively in fastpaced team environment.
• Perform a variety of administrative work requiring independent judgment and excellent organizational skills.
• Learn new technologies to support City initiatives.
Work Environment and Physical Demands

The employee typically works in an office environment and is protected from weather conditions but not necessarily occasional temperature changes. Under some circumstances the employees may work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions. Bending, stooping, and squatting are occasionally required. Employees must listen, hear, and talk often. This position requires light physical activity, such as handling of objects up to 20 pounds.
Selection Guidelines

A formal application and resume is required. Finalists will interview with the appropriate hiring authority. Applicants must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check, and upon employment, must possess a valid Utah driver's license.
