The Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust is hiring two Summer Wildlife Biologists for the 2025 field season in West Athens, CA. Applicants must be Canadian citizens aged 15-30 and legally entitled to work in Canada. The positions involve species identification, public engagement, habitat restoration, and data management. Each contract lasts 8 weeks, with a pay of $18.20 per hour. The roles require in-person work, not remote.
Summer Wildlife Biologist

The Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust is seeking two Summer Wildlife Biologists for the 2025 field season.

Positions are conditional based on funding received from the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

The Canada Summer Jobs Program requires that all applicants:

- be between 15 and 30 years of age

- be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or a person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment. International students are not eligible participants.

- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant Provincial or Territorial legislation and regulations

Each position is offered at a different time; one is available starting May 12th, the other starting June 9th. Each contract lasts for 8 weeks with potential for extension based on job performance, available funding, and TIWLT need.

The Summer Wildlife Biologists will work directly under the Head Wildlife Biologist and Executive Director, and their duties include:

- Identification of species and habitats on both land trust properties and properties of landowners desiring conservation solutions on their lands, with a focus on species at risk and cataloguing invasive species as may be found

- Prepare and involve the general public and youth in talks, walks, nature appreciation for wellbeing, fundraising and conservation of biodiversity

- Forestry: propagating and caring for native trees in the land trust's native nursery and climate change arboretum; and introducing property visitors to native species they can plant at home as solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss

- Participating in agricultural events to relate compatibility of agriculture and habitat and solutions for protecting native species of wildlife

- Aiding the Head Wildlife Biologist in requisite fieldwork for new property acquisitions: collect information to support property reports (Ecological Sensitivity Reports, Property Management Plans, and Baseline Documentation Reports)

- Data management of photos, field notes, GPS coordinates, species lists, etc.

- Restoration of habitat activities, with a specific focus on invasive species management

- Aid in research projects including monitoring for bats and eastern whip-poor-wills (includes evening work) and involving the public

- Work on long-term tasks that support the conservation program, for example critical habitat identification or the maintenance of TIWLT species database

- Completing annual property monitoring for all TIWLT properties, where two biologists work together for safety concerns in fieldwork

Applicants must have a valid Class G driver's license or equivalent.

Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 8 weeks

Pay: $18.20 per hour
