Job Description

The New York League of Conservation Voters seeks a State Policy Advocate based in Albany, NY, responsible for advancing environmental legislation and budget priorities. The role involves lobbying, coalition building, and public education events, with monthly travel to NYC. Candidates should have 3–7 years of experience in government or lobbying, and a strong interest in environmental policy. A bachelor's degree is required, with a salary range of $75K–90K.
Location: Albany, NY (with monthly travel to NYC)

This is a tremendous opportunity to join the New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV), the only statewide environmental organization in New York that works to elect environmentally responsible candidates and pass pro-environment laws. As a non-partisan, pragmatic organization focused on political action, NYLCV is uniquely positioned to drive change at every level of government. This role allows you to be on the frontlines of environmental advocacy, representing the organization in Albany during a critical time for climate and sustainability policy.

Position Summary:

The State Policy Advocate is NYLCV’s lead representative in Albany and plays a vital role in advancing the organization’s legislative and budget priorities at the state level. This position is ideal for someone with a deep interest in environmental policy and a strong understanding of how Albany works—whether from the inside as a government staffer or through prior lobbying experience.

The position reports to the Policy Director and is responsible for lobbying, coalition participation, scheduling key meetings, and maintaining relationships with elected officials, advocacy partners, and stakeholders. Outside of legislative session, the Advocate supports local advocacy work across the Capital Region and Western/Central NY and helps coordinate public education events.

Job Responsibilities:
• Serve as the face of NYLCV in Albany, especially during the legislative session
• Lobby the State Legislature, Governor’s office, state agencies, and local governments
• Schedule and facilitate meetings for senior leadership while in Albany
• Lead and participate in issue-based coalitions, advocate for NYLCV priorities
• Organize and assist with public forums, lobby days, and other events
• Develop and maintain relationships with elected officials, coalition partners, and community stakeholders
• Contribute to the development of NYLCV’s policy agenda

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required
• 3–7 years of experience in government, lobbying, or public policy (preferably in NY State)
• Legally permitted to lobby in New York or able to become compliant immediately
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; persuasive and strategic
• Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills
• Able to work independently and manage time effectively
• Willing and able to work extended hours during peak session periods
• Must be based in Albany or willing to relocate; travel to NYC approximately once per month

Preferred Qualifications:
• Background in environmental or energy policy
• Pre-existing relationships with NY State legislators or government staff
• Experience organizing advocacy campaigns or events
• Familiarity with the quirks and procedures of Albany’s legislative processes
