Job Description
Aviva is seeking a Senior Property Underwriting Specialist for its Construction, Renewable Energy, and Mining team in Toronto, Canada. The role involves underwriting new and renewal business, focusing on large commercial accounts. Candidates should have over 10 years of insurance experience, particularly in property underwriting, with strong relationship-building and leadership skills. This position is part of a new team aimed at expanding Aviva's business footprint.

Aviva Global Corporate and Specialty has an excellent opportunity within our Construction, Renewable Energy, and Mining team in the Corporate Risk Group. Ideally this role will be based in Toronto, Ontario. We are recruiting for a Senior Property Underwriting Specialist to lead and guide us while we expand our business footprint in alignment within these important industry groups. This is a new role on a newly created industry focused team which increases the opportunity for success and development for interested candidates.
As a Property Underwriting Specialist, your primary focus and responsibility will be to work on new and renewal business, as well as prospecting new opportunities with a strong focus on construction builders' risk, construction operational property, and renewable energy property business. Target customer focus is on are Large Commercial and Multinational Accounts with annual sales greater than $200M in revenue.
What You'll Do
• Qualify and underwrite account deals through understanding needs and risk characteristics of the customer, ensuring benefit from both top-line and profitability perspective.
• Develop and maintain relationships cross-functionally and with external stakeholders, to deliver exceptional broker and customer service.
• Help shape and guide our Complex Risk, Property, assessment of opportunities.
• Maintain the quality and profitability of the portfolio and refer all risks outside established authority level to Specialist.
• Help identify areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies, applying remediation strategies as appropriate.
• Build knowledge of all Information Systems/Programs within Commercial Insurance.
• Participate in Quality Reviews and audits as required.
• Support maintenance of a compliant UW environment in relation to guidelines and rules.
What You'll Bring
• 10 + years experience in the insurance industry as a commercial lines property underwriter with:
• Post-secondary education (Business or related discipline) or equivalent practical experience
• 5 + years of technical underwriting expertise on Property Builder's Risk Policies
• Contractors Equipment, Energy and / or Mining underwriting experience an asset
• Proficient technical knowledge of complex risks in line of business and segments
• Excellent written/verbal communication skills & negotiating skills.
• Ability to problem solve and to make/impact decisions.
• Strong leadership, negotiation and influencing skills
• Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
• Strong marketing and relationship building skills with both internal and external partners
• Customer focus and seek opportunities to improve broker/customer experience
• Professional attitude, teamwork, strong pipeline management/sales consultation skills
• Good understanding of line of business; discusses barriers with leadership
• Developing proficiency in applying highly niche knowledge and expertise of complex risks for large commercial accounts
