Job Description
The Sr. Specialist, Environmental & Sustainability at HL-GA Battery Company LLC in Ellabell, GA is responsible for leading environmental compliance programs, including permitting and reporting, to ensure adherence to regulations. This role involves collaboration with various teams to manage environmental risks, support sustainability goals, conduct audits, and develop KPIs. The position requires on-site presence for manufacturing operations and may involve shifts and emergency response.
Summary:
The Sr. Specialist, Environmental & Sustainability serves as a senior technical resource responsible for executing and maintaining environmental compliance programs in support of manufacturing operations. This role leads environmental permitting, reporting, regulatory compliance execution, and ISO 14001 system implementation to ensure adherence to federal, state, and local requirements.
The Sr. Specialist partners cross-functionally with operations, engineering, and external agencies to anticipate, evaluate, and control environmental risks while driving continuous improvement and supporting the company’s sustainability objectives.
Responsibilities:
• Lead and manage environmental permitting activities including air permits, wastewater/NPDES permits, storm water permits, hazardous and non-hazardous waste programs, and chemical reporting requirements
• Prepare, submit, and maintain required environmental regulatory reports including Tier II, Form R, GHG, SPCC, and other applicable submissions
• Maintain regulatory compliance calendars and ensure all required reporting deadlines are met
• Serve as primary technical contact for regulatory agency inquiries, inspections, and correspondence
• Interpret environmental regulations and translate requirements into operational controls
• Maintain and execute the Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with ISO 14001 standards
• Lead internal environmental audits and support external certification audits
• Track corrective and preventive actions and verify closure
• Maintain documentation and records required for ISO certification and regulatory compliance
• Collect, validate, and analyze environmental performance data including emissions, wastewater discharge, waste generation, and sustainability metrics
• Develop and maintain environmental KPIs and dashboards for leadership review
• Identify trends and recommend corrective or preventive actions to mitigate risk
• Conduct environmental inspections and compliance audits within production areas
• Support incident investigations related to environmental releases, spills, or non-compliance events
• Develop and implement corrective action plans in coordination with operations
• Provide technical guidance to engineering and operations teams regarding environmental impact of process changes or new equipment
• Support sustainability initiatives including waste reduction, recycling programs, energy efficiency projects, and carbon reduction efforts
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive environmental stewardship programs
• Identify opportunities to reduce environmental risk, cost, and operational impact
• Develop and manage budgets for environmental permits, fees, consulting services, and monitoring activities
• Coordinate with environmental consultants and laboratories to ensure accurate testing and reporting
• This position supports essential manufacturing operations and may require working day or night shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and reporting to work during emergency situations, inclement weather events, or other operational disruptions when it is safe to do so.
• Maintain cleanliness at work-site in accordance with 5S3R Standards
• Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field require
• Advanced certifications or a master’s degree preferred
• Professional certifications such as CHMM, CIH, CSP, or PE preferred
• May be required to respond to after-hours operational issues or emergency events in support of facility infrastructure, utilities systems, or safe plant operations.
Work Authorization:
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Experience:
• 7+ years of environmental compliance and regulatory reporting experience in a manufacturing or highly regulated industrial environment
• Direct experience managing air emissions, wastewater, storm water, and hazardous waste compliance programs
• Demonstrated experience maintaining ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
• Experience interacting with federal and state environmental regulatory agencies
Skills:
• Strong working knowledge of EPA, state environmental regulations, and industrial compliance requirements
• Ability to independently manage complex permitting and reporting processes
• Experience conducting environmental audits and compliance inspections
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
• Effective written and verbal communication skills for interaction with regulators and senior leadership
• Ability to manage multiple compliance deadlines with high attention to detail
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and environmental data tracking systems
• Ability to work flexible hours as needed to support production and global coordination
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to properly and regularly utilize the following PPE for a period of up to 12 hours:
• Safety glasses
• Steel-toed shoes
• Nitrile gloves
• Ear protection
• Cleanroom suit
Must be able to perform the following activities repeatedly for periods of up to 12 hours:
• Lift, push, and pull materials or equipment
• Stoop, twist, and bend
• Reach overhead
• Sit and/or stand for extended periods
• Use hands and fingers to operate tools, equipment, and computer systems
Work Environment:
• Work may involve handling or working in proximity to hazardous materials and regulated industrial chemicals.
• Exposure to chemical vapors, dust, or other controlled substances may occur depending on process assignment.
• Strict adherence to company safety policies and OSHA Hazard Communication requirements is mandatory.
• Employees must properly wear and maintain assigned personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times within designated areas.
• Required PPE may include respirators, chemical-resistant garments, gloves, eye protection, face shields, or other equipment determined by process and risk assessment.
• Exposure to noise, heat, mechanical equipment, and industrial chemicals may occur depending on system location.
• Work may occur in mechanical rooms, utility areas, rooftops, or other industrial environments.
