About the position

Join KCI Technologies, Inc. as a Senior Project Engineer in our Natural Resource Practice, where you will play a pivotal role in supporting our Ecological Restoration group. This position is based in our headquarters in Sparks, MD, or in Fulton, MD, and involves working with a dedicated team of engineers, planners, and scientists. Our team engages in a variety of environmental, natural resource, and water resources projects for private clients as well as state and local governments throughout the mid-Atlantic region. As a Senior Project Engineer, you will be responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and directing several large and significant projects or a project of major scope and importance. You will have the potential to manage 1 to 3 direct reports, providing guidance and oversight to ensure project success. In this role, you will serve as a specialist within the organization, applying advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes relevant to your area of responsibility. You will stay updated on new scientific methods and developments that may impact KCI, allowing you to recommend necessary changes or new programs. Your responsibilities will also include assisting in proposals, negotiations, and presentations, as well as collaborating with various departments to foster client relationships that lead to sustainable and profitable revenue. Your technical responsibilities will encompass leading geomorphological assessments, including non-datum surveys, photo documentation, and sediment sampling. You will develop conceptual designs and reports that articulate alternatives, utilizing tools such as ArcGIS or MicroStation. Estimating credits based on the Bay Protocols for Urban Stream Restoration and functional feet and buffer credits using the Maryland Stream Mitigation Framework will also be part of your duties. You will build 3D surfaces in MicroStation or AutoCAD Civil3D to accurately represent existing and proposed conditions, develop hydrology for sites, and perform hydraulic modeling using HEC RAS and other accepted programs. Additionally, you will create detailed engineering stream restoration designs, oversee construction, and conduct post-construction performance monitoring, including the development of as-built and monitoring reports. This position requires strong analytical skills to solve complex problems both independently and in a team setting, along with excellent organizational abilities, regular communication, and effective time management skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead geomorphological assessments including non-datum surveys, photo documentation, and sediment sampling.

• Develop conceptual designs and reports using ArcGIS or MicroStation.

• Estimate credits based on the Bay Protocols for Urban Stream Restoration.

• Build 3D surfaces in MicroStation or AutoCAD Civil3D to represent existing and proposed surfaces accurately.

• Develop hydrology for sites, including field verification of drainage areas and calibration to field surveys.
,
• Perform hydraulic modeling including 1D HEC RAS and 2D modeling.
,
• Create detailed engineering stream restoration designs including plans, reports, specifications, and engineer's estimates.
,
• Oversee construction and post-construction performance monitoring with associated as-built and monitoring report development.

Requirements
• Minimum of 6 years professional experience related to ecological restoration and stream assessment for natural and urbanized channels.
,
• Demonstrated understanding of fluvial geomorphology principles and processes and restoration methodologies for freshwater and tidal ecosystems.
,
• Experience performing geomorphic assessments and restoration design in the Mid-Atlantic region.
,
• Ability to organize and write technical assessment and design reports documenting approach, findings, and recommendations.
,
• Proficiency in MicroStation or AutoCAD, including the ability to build 3D surfaces of existing and proposed conditions.
,
• Ability to prepare engineers' cost estimates and specifications.
,
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
,
• Ability to work in a team environment with individuals in other geographies.
,
• Ability to travel to job sites and perform field work in various weather conditions.

Nice-to-haves
• Ability to perform Hydrology & Hydraulics (H&H) analysis using TR-55 and TR-20; and HEC-RAS or other programs accepted by regulatory agencies.

• Ability to perform and document Protocol computations for Sediment and Nutrient load reductions and equivalent impervious acre credits.

• Experience in State, Federal, and Local permitting.
