POSITION SUMMARY The Sr. Lab Technician Physics & Astronomy manages and maintains the lecture demonstration facilities and instructional laboratories. This position builds apparatus for visual, tactile and auditory class demonstrations. The Sr. Lab Technician is responsible for hiring, processing personnel paperwork in collaboration with the Academic Coordinator, and directly overseeing one or more student employees in the Physics & Astronomy department.

Reporting directly to the Department Chair, the Sr. Lab Technician Physics & Astronomy performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
• Recruit, process personnel paperwork for, and lead one or more student employees in the Physics & Astronomy department. Must complete the bi-annual AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention Training as required by the State of California. a. Oversee student employees for faculty-sponsored outreach programs throughout the academic year.
• Set up, maintain, and repair equipment for various laboratory procedures and classroom demonstrations.
• Collaborate with ITS to set up, maintain, and repair AV equipment for lectures, colloquia, guest and group presentations, and meetings.
• Utilize or participate in the use of computers, computer-operated AV equipment, and computer-operated laboratory equipment as needed for laboratory procedures and lecture demonstrations.
• Partner with faculty to design and fabricate new equipment or modify existing equipment for the introductory laboratories and lecture demonstrations.
• Continuously engage with emerging research and advancements in physics education and laboratory instruction to implement innovative and effective teaching methodologies.
• Design and construct instructional demonstrations utilizing machine shop and carpentry tools, ensuring precision and safety in the development of educational materials
• Provide technical support for video recording classes and events as requested by faculty.
• Engage in outreach and educational activities to area schools and organizations.
• Contribute to the selection, requisition, and purchase of new equipment.
• Procure supplies and expendable materials for laboratories and classes.
• Manage, inventory, and organize stockrooms and equipment for courses and outreach.
• Coordinate special projects/tasks and provide assistance as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in the areas of Physics, Astronomy or a related field is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's Degree is preferred. A valid driver's license is required or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events. Must take and successfully pass a functional capacity test after job offer and prior to hire. A minimum of 4 years of lab experience is required. Experience at an academic institution is preferred.

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday â“ Friday, except during the designated summer period when office hours end at 4:30 p.m. Overtime, holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: Regular, Full-time, benefits eligible, non-exempt position. The salary range for this role is between $31.79 to $36.24 hourly, with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the organization will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include education, training, prior experience, and performance in prior role. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
