What We Do
The Public Works Department provides a variety of services related to the development, construction, inspection, improvement, and maintenance of the City's infrastructure. This infrastructure includes traffic lights, sidewalks, streetlights, and roadways. In addition, Public Works runs the following enterprise operations: Water, Solid Waste, Wastewater, Stormwater, and Parking Operations.
What We're Looking For
The City of Beverly Hills is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Solid Waste Equipment Operator I or Solid Waste Equipment Operator II (dependent on qualifications). The incumbent of this position will perform collection of residential refuse which includes solid waste, mixed recycling, and organics (food and yard waste), and perform heavy manual labor involved with alley maintenance and bulky item pick-ups.
Solid Waste Equipment Operator I Job Description
Salary Range: $62,135 - $76,977 Annually
Solid Waste Equipment Operator II Job Description
Salary Range: $65,307 - $80,905 Annually

Selection Process:

Additional Requirement
As set forth by the Department of Transportation Regulation 49 Part 382, finalist(s) will be subject to a pre-employment medical screening for alcohol and controlled substances. Finalist(s) will also be required to provide written consent for the City of Beverly Hills to obtain drug and alcohol testing records from all employers within the last two (2) years.

Disaster Service Workers: All City of Beverly Hills employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
Major Duties
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Perform various solid waste collection duties including, but not limited to, curbside collections, alley collections, alley maintenance, and bulky item pick-ups.
• Safely and efficiently, operate various solid waste vehicles and heavy equipment, e.g., 3-axle collection vehicles (automated side loader, large rear loader, and front-end loader), mini rear loader, skip loader, forklift, high-powered chipping equipment and dump truck, and other vehicles on city streets, alleys, and freeways.
• Perform daily vehicle inspection (pre-trip and post-trip) and complete required checklist to ensure safe vehicle operation. Identify and report any mechanical problems or service needs to supervisor and fleet maintenance staff.
• Fuel or charge assigned vehicle and maintain the inside and outside of vehicle clean for safe operation.
• Report to supervisor any and all conditions that prevent pick-ups of refuse as scheduled.
• Collect solid waste (refuse, garbage, trash, etc.) from containers and empty into collection vehicles; safely clear any jams that may occur in the truck; compact refuse when necessary to ensure good loads and prevent littering.
• Recognize hazardous materials in the waste stream, take appropriate action, and report findings to supervisor.
• Transport and unload collected refuse to designated location for processing; maintain records of tonnage delivered to facility.
• Use heavy equipment and/or perform heavy manual labor in the collection of trash, bulky item pick-up, and alley maintenance.
• Make special pick-ups as needed; issue reminder tags or notices, as needed.
• Listen to customer concerns, questions, and complaints and provide solutions within the prescribed City regulations; provide copies of applicable solid waste rules and regulations as needed.
• Assemble, deliver, remove, and maintain City-provided waste containers as directed, e.g., solid waste, organic, green waste, etc.
• Use heavy equipment for the following: store, organize, and rearrange collected green waste, e-waste and hazardous waste; load and unload new shipments of supplies such as trash containers, absorbent, compost, etc.
• Assist with oil spill mitigation in public right-of-way by setting up traffic control devices and spreading absorbent.
• May assist with training activities for solid waste utility workers, maintenance workers, contracted personnel, temporary employees, and volunteers related to collection operations and the safe use of collection vehicles.
• May be required to respond to after-hours emergency conditions.
• Assist new or existing staff in learning departmental practices and protocols, methods, and procedures.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.
• Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
In addition to the above essential duties, Solid Waste Equipment Operator II may perform, but not limited to, the following duties:
22. Participate and or lead training activities related to collection and street sweeping operations and the safe use of associated collection and street sweeping vehicles.
23. May assist with the evaluation of solid waste operations personnel.
24. Serve as a relief operator for street sweeping operations.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Solid Waste Equipment Operator I
• Experience: No experience required. One year of experience driving and operating equipment in the collection of solid waste and recycling materials is desirable.
• Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License and Certificate
• Possession of a valid California Commercial Class B driver's license without air brake restrictions and a California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) medical certificate dated within the last two (2) years.
• Possession of a forklift certificate, or ability to obtain within three (3) months of appointment.
Solid Waste Equipment Operator II
In addition to the qualifications for the Solid Waste Equipment Operator I:
• Experience: Four years of experience in the collection of solid waste and recycling materials.
• Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License and Certificate
• Possession of a valid California Commercial Class B driver's license without air brake restrictions and a California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) medical certificate dated within the last two years.
• Possession of a forklift certificate.
