Wärtsilä Corporation is seeking a Software Solutions Engineer for their Energy Storage & Optimization team in Herndon, VA, following a hybrid work model. The role involves developing software for grid-scale energy storage projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and supporting existing projects. Ideal candidates should have experience in Object Oriented Programming, scripting, networking, and energy industry knowledge is a plus. Strong communication skills and flexibility for occasional travel are also required.

Software Solutions Engineer at Wartsila Energy Storage & Optimization (ES&O) are software engineers that specialize in solving novel and specific challenges related to our grid-scale battery energy storage projects, and our Power Plant Controller (PPC) software. Software Solutions Engineer are strong software engineering generalists that bridge the gap between our standard software product offering, and the specific software requirements of each project.
• *The location for this position is Herndon, VA and will follow a hybrid work model.
• *This role will be responsible for the following:**
• Development of software in support of project-specific or customer-specific requirements that deviate from our standard product offering. This often involves working with cross-functional teams to address problems ranging from networking, to power & energy, to runtime and performance, to usability and efficiency.
• Development of novel tools and techniques to support the effectiveness of our project commissioning teams as they deliver projects to customers
• Support for our existing projects in production, by investigating/troubleshooting issues, addressing bugs, and making quality-of-life improvements for our Lifecycle Support team, while supporting change-orders and new feature requests proposed by the customer after delivery.
• Support for our sales and commercial teams with answers to software questions
• Prototyping and R&D
• *Ideal candidates are strong Software Engineering generalists with the following technical skills:

• Experience in Object Oriented Programming languages, ideally Java.
• Experience with scripting/automation tools like Python
• Experience with networking fundamentals, including diagnostic tools such as WireShark
• Experience working on/in Unix environments, and knowledge of common Unix tools
• Experience with industrial communication protocols, such as DNP3, Modbus, or OPCUA is ideal
• Experience in the energy industry is a bonus
• *Additionally, ideal candidates should have the following non-technical characteristics:
• Strong spoken and written communication skills
• Willingness to communicate directly with customers and contractors on technical matters
• Willingness to occasionally travel to the physical locations of hardware tests or energy project sites
• Flexibility of daily working hours in order to facilitate work across time zones with both customers and internal teams
