Job Description
The Shellfish Aquaculture Research Farm Intern at William & Mary Virginia Institute of Marine Science offers a part-time, temporary position for individuals with a high school diploma and an interest in aquaculture or marine science. The role involves hands-on learning in shellfish farm operations, assisting with equipment, monitoring shellfish growth, and participating in harvesting activities. The internship is based at Gloucester Point, VA, and lasts up to six months.
Position Overview
Salary: Up to $19.00 Hourly
Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience Required: Entry-level with interest in aquaculture or marine science
Description
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science at William & Mary advances coastal and marine science through research, education, and applied solutions. The Shellfish Aquaculture Program supports sustainable seafood production, workforce development, and industry innovation.
This internship provides hands-on exposure to shellfish aquaculture research and farm operations at the Gloucester Point campus. The role emphasizes learning through observation and supervised participation, offering practical experience in aquaculture techniques, equipment use, and research support.
Responsibilities
• Shadow staff during daily shellfish farm operations
• Assist with cleaning, staging, and preparation of equipment and supplies
• Observe and support safe use of tools and farm equipment
• Assist with vessel operations and maintenance under supervision
• Support installation and repair of aquaculture equipment
• Monitor shellfish growth and assist with inventory tracking
• Participate in harvesting activities including sorting, counting, and processing shellfish
• Maintain basic records and enter data accurately
• Engage in training and professional development opportunities
Minimum Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Demonstrated interest in aquaculture, marine science, or related field
• Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision
• Ability to maintain accurate records and data entry
• Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions
• Ability to travel as needed
• Ability to obtain small vessel operator certification within one month
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Preferred Qualifications
• Coursework in aquaculture, marine science, or environmental science
• Familiarity with small boats or marine environments
• Previous internship, volunteer, or field-based experience
Additional Notes
• Temporary internship not exceeding six months
• Part-time hours not exceeding 29 hours per week
• Based at Gloucester Point, Virginia
• Work may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends
• Position contingent on funding availability
• Background check required
