Job Application for Senior Mechanical Engineer at Remora

Senior Mechanical Engineer at Remora

*Location: Wixom, Michigan, United States*

Remora is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer who will drive the development of the vacuum compression and CO2 storage subsystems in the Remora mobile carbon capture device from concept through production. This role will lead requirement generation, component development, component sourcing, and systems testing.

We're a 50-person climate tech startup based in Detroit, MI. We're building a device that captures a semi-truck's carbon emissions directly from the tailpipe. We'll sell the CO2 to end users and share that revenue with our customers, so our device will create a new revenue stream while reducing their emissions. We've signed up some of the largest companies in the world to pilot our technology, including iconic multibillion-dollar brands, top trucking companies, and some of the most recognizable Fortune 100 companies.

We've raised multiple rounds of funding from top investors like Lowercarbon Capital, Union Square Ventures, First Round Capital, Y Combinator, and Valor Equity Partners.

Responsibilities

  • Generate requirements for the vacuum compression and CO2 storage subsystems based on regulations, existing standards, and new standards created by Remora.
  • Drive the development of the vacuum compression and CO2 storage subsystems in the Remora device in partnership with our subject matter experts and suppliers.
  • Set strategy, delivery, and goals for the teams working on the subsystems to achieve subsystem requirements on an aggressive timeline.
  • Serve as a point person for the subsystem with other members of the Engineering team and share regular updates on progress with the team.
  • Lead design reviews, DFMEA, and DVP&R bench testing, system testing, pre-production verification and validation, and production design release.
  • Design vehicle systems for manufacturability and maintainability.
  • Develop analytical and computational models of vacuum compression and storage systems for feasibility studies and system troubleshooting.
  • Work with suppliers to optimize subsystems to minimize power draw, weight, and volume while developing packaging for reliable, safe operation of subsystems that are not traditionally used on a vehicle.
  • Lead research on new technologies for vacuum compression and CO2 storage for implementation on the device.
  • Experience moving quickly and making decisions with significant uncertainty.
  • Unusually strong leadership, communication, ownership, and strategic thinking.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 10 years of mechanical engineering experience.
  • 5 years of R&D experience working on first-of-its-kind complex hardware products with short timelines and limited resources.
  • Unusually strong leadership, communication, ownership, and strategic thinking.
  • Experience working closely with suppliers and driving them to aggressive timelines.
  • Experience moving quickly and making decisions with significant uncertainty.
  • Experience rapidly learning about novel technologies and identifying new technologies for integration into systems.

Preferred

Many different profiles would be relevant for this role, so candidates are not expected to have all of these experiences listed below, but ideally at least two:

  • Automotive experience, ideally with heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Experience applying existing regulations and standards to novel technologies, ideally pressurized gas and/or vacuum in a heavy truck application.
  • Electro-Mechanical system and/or Process engineering experience at a power plant, refinery, gas separation, or similar.
  • Experience with fluid flow optimization for reducing system losses and power.
  • Experience with vacuum pumps, compressors, or pressure vessels, and ideally experience with using these systems in aerospace, automotive, or heavy truck applications.
  • Experience with integrating electromechanical subsystems including valving, leakage, pressure drop, routing, and cabling.
  • Experience with the mechanical integration of system hardware.
  • Experience with the transfer and storage of liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide.
  • Experience with industrial gas separation, ideally PVSA, TSA gas separation processes.
  • Experience with the use of non-automotive technologies in an automotive application.
  • Experience at a venture-backed startup.

What We Value

  • **Mission First**: Laser focus on our mission, strategic thinking with an eye to the long term.
  • **Burning Urgency**: Strong bias toward action, quiet determination, and unwavering drive.
  • **Uncompromising Honesty**: Open communication, accountability, and directness.
  • **Treat People Exceptionally Well**: Exceptional respect, empowerment, and diversity.
  • **Joyful Curiosity**: Love for learning, exploration, and innovation.

If you are excited to work with a passionate team on cutting-edge technology that addresses climate challenges, apply now to join Remora as a Senior Mechanical Engineer!
