Job Application for Principal Automotive Structural Engineer at Remora

Apply Now

Remora is hiring a Principal Automotive Structural Engineer who will develop the frame and mounting system for the Remora mobile carbon capture device from concept through production. This role will lead requirement generation, component development, component sourcing, and systems testing with a focus on safety and regulatory compliance.

We're a 50-person climate tech startup based in Detroit, MI. We're building a device that captures a semi-truck's carbon emissions directly from the tailpipe. We'll sell the CO2 to end users and share that revenue with our customers, so our device will create a new revenue stream while reducing their emissions.

Responsibilities

  • Generate requirements for the frame and mounting system based on regulations (e.g., FMVSS, existing standards, and new standards created by Remora).
  • Develop a frame for the Remora device that mounts on a Class 8 truck chassis behind the cab, ensuring safe operation, maintainability, and manufacturability of the truck and device over the device's lifetime.
  • Develop a safe packaging system that minimizes weight, volume, and impact on vehicle dynamics, allowing for safe and easy assembly, installation, and maintenance.
  • Advise customers on upgrades required for their trucks (e.g., brakes, tires, steering, suspension, etc.) to ensure safe operation with the Remora device.
  • Own weight and volume budgets for the overall device and sub-systems.
  • Work closely with other members of the Engineering team to drive requirements and improve the volume, weight, and packaging of each of the device sub-systems.
  • Lead design reviews, pre-production verification and validation, DFMEA, DVP R, and design release for the frame subsystem and vehicle mounting interfaces.
  • Develop and execute a testing strategy, including simulation (e.g., FEA, CAE) and real-world testing (e.g., crash testing, shaker table, etc.).
  • Work with suppliers in partnership with the purchasing team to meet design schedule and cost requirements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on structural engineering, diesel engines, vehicle dynamics, heavy-duty automotive powertrain, and heavy-duty regulations/standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 15 years of automotive structural experience, ideally with heavy-duty vehicles (e.g., Class 8 trucks, military vehicles, mining haul trucks).
  • 5 years of R&D experience working on first-of-its-kind complex hardware products with short timelines and limited resources.
  • Experience creating 3D models using Solidworks.
  • Experience utilizing FEA, CAE simulation tools.
  • Experience with DVP R and DFMEA for automotive structural components.
  • Expertise in structural engineering, diesel engines, vehicle dynamics, heavy-duty automotive powertrain, and heavy-duty regulations/standards (e.g., FMVSS).
  • Understanding of major vehicle subsystems, including powertrain, brakes, ABS software, steering, suspensions, wheels, and tires.
  • Experience moving quickly and making decisions with significant uncertainty.
  • Unusually strong leadership, communication, ownership, and strategic thinking.

Preferred

  • Experience leading novel automotive structural designs, ideally a frame or mounting system for a heavy-duty vehicle.
  • Applying existing regulations and standards to novel technologies.
  • Developing and executing novel testing strategies, including simulation (e.g., FEA, CAE) and real-world testing (e.g., crash testing, shaker table, etc.).
  • Knowledge of requirements for Class 8 truck body builders/upfitters.
  • Experience at a venture-backed startup.

What we value

  • **Mission First:** We are laser-focused on our mission and prioritize it over self-interest.
  • **Burning Urgency:** We have a strong bias toward action and execute with focus and speed.
  • **Uncompromising Honesty:** We value honesty in all aspects and take full accountability for mistakes.
  • **Treating People Exceptionally Well:** We care intensely about everyone on this mission with exceptional respect.
  • **Joyful Curiosity:** We love to learn quickly and explore the unknown with excitement.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and want to be part of a mission-driven team, apply now to join us as a Principal Automotive Structural Engineer at Remora in Wixom, Michigan.
