Bering Straits Native Corporation is hiring a Senior Hazardous Building Materials and Industrial Hygiene Consultant for Environmental Management, Inc. in Alaska. The role involves conducting hazardous materials surveys, overseeing industrial hygiene monitoring, and preparing reports. The consultant will also instruct health and safety courses. Occasional travel within Alaska and the U.S. is required for fieldwork and training, but the position is primarily based in-person.
SUMMARY
Environmental Management, Inc. (EMI), a subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation, is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to join our team as a Senior Hazardous Building Materials and Industrial Hygiene Consultant. EMI is a leading environmental consulting firm committed to providing exceptional service to our clients while promoting sustainable practices and protecting the environment. This position will primarily support EMI's consulting departments, with occasional support for the training department by serving as an instructor for a variety of health, safety, and environmental courses.
The Senior Hazardous Building Materials and Industrial Hygiene Consultant will be responsible for conducting and overseeing hazardous building materials surveys (HBMS), developing hazardous materials abatement project design specifications, and performing or supervising a range of industrial hygiene monitoring activities. These may include mold assessments and remediation consulting, silica exposure monitoring, indoor air quality assessments, vapor intrusion assessments, and other related evaluations. The position also includes preparing detailed reports and working closely with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure successful project execution.
On an as-needed basis, this individual will provide both in-person and online instruction for EMI training courses. Topics may include asbestos abatement and project design, asbestos inspection and management planning, and lead renovation, repair, and painting (RRP) training.
The employee may receive additional compensation for extended field projects or assignments that involve long workdays, provided such work is approved in advance by a supervisor. Occasional travel will be required throughout Alaska and the United States for fieldwork and training purposes. Most assignments will last less than one week, though longer travel periods may occasionally be necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct hazardous building materials surveys (HBMS) for asbestos, lead, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other hazardous materials
• Perform industrial hygiene (IH) monitoring for airborne contaminants, occupational noise, and other workplace hazards; conduct mold assessments and develop remediation designs; and provide other related IH services
• Assist in preparing proposals, , creating work plans, conducting fieldwork as needed, documenting and reporting field activities, coordinating with regulatory agencies, communicating with clients, preparing technical reports, and offering technical support
• Demonstrate professional communication skills-oral, written, digital, and visual-to effectively collaborate with project teams, regulatory agencies, and clients
• Ensure the delivery of high-quality work products that meet or exceed industry standards
• Stay current on industry trends and best practices through ongoing training, professional publications, and workshops
• Instruct health, safety, and environmental (HSE) courses on a variety of topics
• Support training operations in additional capacities as needed
• Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience, Education, and Certification
• High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
• At least 20 years of experience in hazardous materials testing and consultation (asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, PCB, etc.)
• Experience performing occupational exposure assessments including, but not limited to, asbestos air monitoring, hazardous atmosphere monitoring, and other hazard monitoring
• Experience devolping reports and cost proposals
Location and Commitments
• Onsite, in-person position at our Anchorage office.
• Occasional, part-time telework is optional upon approval.
• Able to travel and work in the field as needed, with exposure to outdoor elements.
• Willingness to perform overtime and weekend work to ensure on-time deliverables.
• Able to lift weights up to 40 pounds.
• Legally authorized to work in the US; no visa sponsorship is offered for this position.
• Be able to access military or other government facilities.

NECESSARY PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The job requires the physical ability to perform field work, traverse various terrains for extended periods, and lift up to 40 pounds at a time. Additionally, applicants must be able to maintain prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer with frequent opportunities to move about . Essential and marginal functions may require applicants to maintain the physical conditions necessary for extended periods of bending, stooping, sitting, walking, or standing. Medical clearance to wear a respirator is required.
DOT COVERED/SAFETY-SENSITIVE ROLE REQUIREMENTS
• This position is not subject to federal requirements regarding the Department of Transportation's "safety-sensitive" functions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The job is performed both in the office and the field. The office/classroom setting is exposed to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse, and multi-line telephone system. The field setting requires firsthand gathering data and monitoring environmental conditions, with exposure to outdoor elements . Some work involves working within regulated areas where hazardous substances/toxins may be present. Work in these environments will require personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators and protective suits. Travel is required.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS
As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and have acceptable background check results. If applicable to the contract, you must also obtain the appropriate clearance levels required and be able to obtain access to military installations.
