Job Description

Stillwater Sciences is hiring a Senior Environmental Scientist in Los Angeles, CA, to address ecological issues in Southern California. The role involves analyzing and designing multi-benefit green infrastructure and conservation projects, managing technical teams, and communicating complex information to stakeholders. Candidates should have a relevant advanced degree and experience in project management, landscape planning, and ecological design. Proficiency in tools like Excel, Adobe Creative Suite, and GIS software is preferred.
Stillwater Sciences seeks a dedicated Senior Environmental Scientist to join our team and make a substantial positive impact on the complex ecological issues facing Southern California. Our Los Angeles office delivers diverse projects spanning analysis, design, and planning for the restoration of Southern California’s ecosystems, rivers, and watersheds. Our projects prioritize the protection and enhancement of urban and wildland biodiversity, access to nature, and the creation of multi-benefit, nature-based solutions.

The selected candidate may work on a variety of site- to regional-scale, multi-disciplinary projects. Projects typically integrate rigorous ecology and hydrology-driven spatial or systems analyses to support conservation and restoration design, habitat connectivity, green infrastructure, landscape and watershed planning and design, and similar. Examples of recent and ongoing relevant projects include:
• South Los Angeles County Landscape Connectivity Plan
• Los Angeles River California Environmental Flows Framework
• Los Angeles River Fish Passage and Habitat Structures Design Project
• Newhall Pass I-5 Wildlife Crossing Design Project
• UCLA Campus Landscape Plan Biodiversity Framework
• Concepts for Advancing Green and Blue Infrastructure in Konya, Turkey

The Environmental Scientist will be responsible for:
• Analysis and planning of multi-benefit green infrastructure, landscape and open space, biodiversity and conservation, and/or water systems programs for municipalities, agencies, and large landowners.
• Site to regional-scale analyses to guide nature-based solutions potentially including production, synthesis, and application of diverse data spanning ecology, biology, hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, climate, soil science, social science, built and infrastructure systems, or similar.
• Design of green infrastructure, ecological restoration, native plant landscapes, nature parks and open space, and conservation development.
• Participation in multi-disciplinary planning processes and creation of integrated analyses and models.
• Communication of complex information to stakeholders through graphics, documents, and presentations.
• Guidance of technical staff, including scientists, engineers, planners, GIS specialists, and landscape designers, toward contracted deliverables.
• Project management, coordination, and meeting facilitation.

Qualified applicants should possess:
• Ability to prepare technical reports through summarizing model input/outputs, writing, and preparing/contributing to graphics, slide decks, and summaries.
• Experience in physical planning, landscape, green infrastructure, or conservation design at local to regional scales.
• Experience in high-profile, stakeholder-driven project contexts.
• Strong project management skills.
• Strong Excel and Adobe Creative Suite skills.
• Ability to work independently towards a desired outcome.
• Experience guiding and managing a team of technical staff.
• Experience with Omniscape connectivity modeling software, or similar a plus.
• Experience with AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS a plus.
• Experience with Python, MATLAB, R programming, or similar a plus.

Required qualifications include:
• Masters or Doctorate degree in ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, engineering, urban planning, landscape architecture, hydrology, or similar preferred.
• 5-10+ years of professional experience, or comparable.
• Valid Driver’s license in good standing.
• Must live in the United States and possess a valid work authorization.
• Location in the Los Angeles metro area is preferred.

Compensation and Application Details:
• Full-time (40 hours/week) position with benefits.
• Annual salary $100,000-$135,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
