Job Description

SMEC is seeking a Senior Engineer – Power Distribution in Johannesburg, South Africa. The role involves leading and managing medium to large projects within the Power & Energy division, focusing on areas like Renewable Energy and power distribution. Responsibilities include project management, team coordination, budget management, client interaction, and technical report writing. Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 8 years of relevant experience.

Section Manager: Power & Energy, or any other person appointed to supervise him/her from time to time

PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for providing professional services on projects within the Power & Energy Functional group, including leading, design management and design delivery for projects and managing professionalteams of medium/largeprojects in any of the focus areas; Renewable Energy, Building Services,Power Reticulation, DistributionSubstations, Overhead Power Lines, Underground Power cables, Streetlighting, Urban Energy, Water Plants, Asset Management and Master Planning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Responsible for the general management of medium/large projects
• Responsible for the project management and coordination of multi-disciplinary project teams
• Manage budgets, resourcing and outsourcing of project work within the section
• Negotiate and agree project budgets with other sections on large projects comprising multi-disciplinary project teams
• Author competent technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality
• Check and review the deliverables of project team
• Take responsibility for project deliverables
• Present / represent designs at technical committees
• Draft successful responses to bids
• Clear knowledge of work procedures and ability to brief project team on them
• Assign to, and manage work of others
• Regular client contact under direction of more senior manager
• Build relationships with clients
• Successfully identify and following through on leads associated with additional work prospects
• Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets
• Discuss in detail with clients the business technologies and markets
• Train and mentor others in respective functional field and build a team
• Market SMEC’s technical capability
• Supervise Engineers or Technicians in undertaking checks and inspections of constructed works for compliance with design and specifications, including monitoring and proposing remedial actions
• Development and/or improvement of function group specific design procedures
• Plan and coordinate investigations and surveys
• Coordinate work between functions

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
• Overseeing and delivery of design according to standards
• Meeting Quality and Timeliness of reporting and other deliverables such as designs and drawings
• Setting of clear project goals and requirements that are agreed to by all stakeholders
• Planning of workload to meet deadlines
• Knowledge and implementation of SMEC’s systems and procedures
• Meeting of project and internal requirements
• Satisfying of Client requirements on project delivery
• Report writing

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree/higher degree from accredited university/college
• Relevant Professional Registration

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Minimum 8 years of professional experience
• Specialist knowledge of Renewable Energy and/or
• Specialist knowledge of power distribution, reticulation, Substations (Primary / Control plant), Overhead lines and underground cables and/or
• Specialist knowledge of building services for utility buildings, commercial buildings, Urban energy, Water plants, Asset Management and Master planning
• Knowledge of QA and OHS requirements
• Knowledge of the commercial aspects of project management
• Experience in using design software tools e.g DilSilent, AutoCAD, Micro Station, Revit, Relux, DIALux etc
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to effectively write reports
• Courteous and business orientated manners when communicating with stakeholders to foster and promote good working relations
• Co-operative and flexible work style to work in a team environment
• Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
• Ability to make technical decisions which are outcome driven
