Job Description
MISO is hiring a Senior Energy Market Evaluation Engineer in Carmel, IN, with a salary range of $133,500 - $143,500 plus bonuses. The role involves analyzing market operations, ensuring grid reliability for 45 million people, and providing technical leadership. Candidates should have a relevant bachelor's degree, 7-10 years of experience in energy market analysis, and proficiency in data analysis tools. Experience in deregulated electricity markets is preferred.
Starting Salary Range: $133,500 - $143,500 - position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met.
As a Senior Energy Market Evaluation Engineer your work will directly contribute to ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of the power grid that serves 45 million people. By analyzing and enhancing market and system operations you'll help MISO manage congestion through its market systems and ensure sufficient resources are online and available to meet system demands and support grid reliability.
In this role you will evaluate and report on the health of MISO's markets, focusing on their reliability, efficiency and ability to incentivize desired behaviors from our market participants. You will have the opportunity to recommend and evaluate new wholesale electricity market design initiatives that positively impact market outcomes for our stakeholders and end use customers. As a Senior Energy Market Evaluation Engineer you will be expected to provide technical leadership to guide other members of the team and you will be responsible to deliver progress on key projects that expand the team's analytical capabilities.
In one year, you will know you're successful if:
• You are able to perform engineering, statistical and economic analysis on market and system operations, market products, Market Participant behaviors and their resulting market outcomes
• You understand the mechanics of the MISO market systems and how they fit together
• You are able to assess the health of the markets, deliver timely event reporting and validate that market outcomes align with related design requirements
• You collect, categorize, and analyze data to identify patterns and trends
• You implement alerting and screens to flag anomalous market outcomes
• You use data visualization software to report findings in a clear and understandable way
• You present findings and recommend changes to internal and external stakeholders
• You improve analytical processes by identifying, streamlining, and automating redundant activities
• You investigate and make improvements to market models, operational procedures and algorithms
• You assess the compliance of MISO market systems with tariff requirements and propose changes to the systems and tariff to improve compliance
Skills and experience needed for our Senior Energy Market Evaluation Engineer:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology, Power Systems Engineering or other related field required
• Senior: Master's preferred
• A minimum of 7-10 years of relevant work experience required
• Specific experience in energy market forecasting and analysis, power system analysis and operation and associated software development, data science, statistical and econometrics analysis, market design, optimization algorithms
• Working knowledge of data analysis tools and programming languages (e.g. R, Eviews, SAS, Python, VBA, PowerBI, Azure)
• Experience working with power engineering tools preferred (e.g. PSSe, PowerGem, Plexos, PowerWorld)
• (preferred, not required)
• Previous deregulated wholesale electricity market or utility experience (required)
• Previous energy industry experience with a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) or market participant (preferred)
Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
