Senior Electrical Engineer (Grid Specialist - Solar PV & BESS)

Smart4Energy is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer (Grid Specialist - Solar PV & BESS) in Cape Town, South Africa. The role involves supporting grid integration of renewable energy projects, engaging with stakeholders like Eskom, and providing electrical design input. Candidates should have a degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 5 years of relevant experience. This is a two-year contract position with potential for permanence.

With a strong footprint in Africa, their South African team is expanding, and they’re looking for a seasoned Senior Electrical Grid Engineer to support the successful grid integration of clean energy projects, primarily in Solar PV and BESS.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Serve as the key interface for all TSO and DSO engagements, including Eskom and NTCSA.

• Act as custodian of all grid integration designs and manage related technical queries.

• Provide electrical design input into grid planning studies and conceptual design for grid connection applications (Eskom CEL).

• Support the EPC team in generating technical specifications for grid execution tenders, managing the tender process, and recommending awards.

• Engage with public bodies, local communities, and government institutions to secure necessary permits and approvals related to electrical design.

• Represent the company in industry forums and working groups, advocating for grid access and interfacing innovations.

• Collaborate with development and project teams to forecast, plan, and report on the operational pipeline portfolio.

Desired Experience & Qualification

• B.Eng / M.Eng or related in Electrical Engineering.

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the grid design and integration of renewable energy power plants.

• Proven experience designing substations, power lines, and integrating hybrid systems.

• Strong understanding of the South African Grid Code and Eskom standards/procedures.

• Experience managing the Eskom grid connection process from CEL acceptance to commercial operation.

• Proficient in technical modelling and power system analysis.

• ECSA registration is advantageous.
