Job Description

The Toronto Zoo is hiring a Seasonal Sustainability Assistant for a contract position until September 1, 2025, at $17.20 per hour. The role involves assisting with sustainability education, environmental management updates, carbon accounting, and engagement projects. Candidates should be studying or have experience in Environmental Sciences or related fields, possess strong organizational and communication skills, and be available to work flexible hours. The position is not remote.

Rate of Pay: $17.20 per hour

Duration: Contract ends September 1, 2025 (Non-Permanent)

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

Responsibilities:
• Assist the Manager, Environmental Sustainability with the education of Zoo staff on the TZNet0 Sustainability Plan.
• Assist with updates to the Environmental Management System (EMS).
• Assist with conducting Strategic Carbon Management Process.
• Assist with annual carbon accounting reporting.
• Develop resource materials relevant to the new plan.
• Develop long-term action plans for each new objective of the plan.
• Advocate for positive behavior change for environmental conservation.
• Assist with on and off-site sustainability engagement projects such as Pitch-In Clean Up events, Climate Change Awareness activations, invasive species management events, Plastic Free July Campaign, Gorilla on the Line Campaign and Plastics Pathway.
• Follows all policies and branch instructions.
• Attend appropriate training as required.

Qualifications:
• Must have completed or be currently enrolled in university or college program studying Environmental Sciences, Sustainability Management, Urban Planning, Renewable Energy Development, Ecology, or the equivalent amount of training and related experience.
• Must have 1 year of proven related experience in the same or similar position.
• Should be motivated to work in a dynamic and flexible team environment.
• Requires excellent organization and time management skills.
• Should be comfortable speaking in public.
• Additional language skills an asset.
• Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
• Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation an asset.
• An asset to possess an unrestricted Class G driver’s license valid in the Province of Ontario, along with a good driving record.
• Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems (e.g. must be proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically MS Excel).
• Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled.
• Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
• Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.

This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs and therefore, the applicants must meet the eligibility criteria outlined by the grant. These requirements are specified on their website.
