Job Description

The State of North Carolina is hiring Seasonal Environmental Services Assistants for full-time and part-time temporary positions at the NC Zoo in Asheboro. Responsibilities include housekeeping, guest relations, and recycling management to maintain a safe and 'Green' environment for over 900,000 annual guests. Positions require flexibility in scheduling, working outdoors and indoors, and physical tasks. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver's license.
About the position

The Zoo is recruiting for Full-Time and Part-Time Temporary Environmental Services Positions. Temporary part-time positions are assigned to the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources - NC Zoo in Asheboro - Randolph County. Position will work flexible schedules and hours based on business needs. The Environmental Services Branch supports the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) and the NC Zoo by providing professional housekeeping services for the zoo's buildings, exhibits, building grounds, plazas, trails, parking lots, and special events as well as managing the zoo's recycling programs that contribute to a safe, sanitary, and 'Green' zoo environment for guests and staff. Staffs in this branch are charged to provide housekeeping services, guest relations and service recovery to the zoo's annual 900,000+ guests in a manner consistent with the environment of the zoo as a tourism destination and accredited institution. Branch operations are an integral part of the zoo's strategic and operational planning. Public contact is highly visible and interactive, requiring a high level of customer relations and park information training. Environmental Services team members provide an outstanding guest experience while ensuring a safe, sanitary, and 'Green' environment for all guests and employees under direct supervision by the Environmental Services Branch Manager and Team Leaders. Positions work between 20 - 40 hours per week, including holidays and weekends. There are three shifts: weekday 1st shift, weekday 2nd shift or weekend shifts.

Responsibilities
• Overall cleaning of the Parks 5 miles of walking trails including trash removal from pathways, natural areas, recycle bins and trash containers.

• Cleaning of office spaces and common areas.
,
• Cleaning of restrooms through the use of various cleaning supplies and chemicals.
,
• Restocking of bathroom supplies such as toilet paper and paper towels, and feminine products.
,
• Sorting of recycling and compost materials.
,
• Setting up for special events.
,
• Work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions.
,
• Interact and work in large crowds.
,
• Use two way radio communications.
,
• Walk and stand for the majority of the work shift.
,
• Lift and drag at least 30 lbs. of weight.
,
• Drive a variety of utility vehicles and trucks.

Requirements
• Must be at least 16 years of age.
,
• Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License.
,
• Must comply with NC Zoo Dress Code and Appearance Policy.
,
• Ability to work in extreme weather conditions typical to Central NC (i.e. heat, rain, or cold) and stand/walk for extended periods of time.
,
• Must be able to tolerate exposure to outdoor allergens, dust, fumes, odor, loud noises, motion, and vibrations.
,
• Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions.
,
• Manual dexterity sufficient to safely operate rides, and handle tools and equipment.
,
• Possesses sufficient cognitive ability, auditory and visual acuity and communication skills to perform essential duties and follow general safety practices.
,
• Must be willing and able to work varied and long shifts including holidays, weekends and in support of events as needed.
,
• Must have good physical agility, strength, vision & hearing, and the ability to perform strenuous physical work in extremes of weather and challenging physical environments.
,
• Must be able to lift and drag up to 30 lbs.
,
• Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens. Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.). Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines.

Benefits
• Hourly Rate of Pay: $15.00
