Overview

Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), a national laboratory environment for high-hazard experimentation and incident response. Our mission is to ensure the security of the United States and its allies by providing operations, engineering, education, field, and integration services.

Responsibilities

We seek a full-time Scientist I to contribute to solutions of problems in a national laboratory environment, applying academic knowledge and developing good work habits.

Key Responsibilities:
• Contribute to problem-solving using established standards and technical knowledge.
• Apply knowledge to the work environment and develop good work/team habits.
• Define specifications for procurements and initiate purchase requests.
• Follow established technical procedures and instructions.
• Assist in compiling and summarizing scientific data.
• Prepare reports and contribute to proposals.
• Work closely with scientists and engineers at Sandia National Laboratories to field x-ray imaging and spectroscopic diagnostics.
• Develop a rigorous characterization and calibration program for these diagnostics.
• The working environment includes high-voltage systems, lasers, large-scale pulsed power machines, and radiation-generating devices.
• Must possess strong technical writing skills to prepare records and provide regular project updates.
• Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in a calculus-based STEM field with skill-building experience demonstrating deeper technical specialization or cross-disciplinary knowledge.
• Ability to interpret codes and standards within the discipline.
• Experience setting up and operating R&D instrumentation in a laboratory setting.
• Hands-on knowledge of electronic instrumentation, vacuum technology, and programming platforms.
• Familiarity with PCs, PC application software, and NI LabVIEW.
• Desire to learn and innovate, be a team player, and travel occasionally.
• Ability to develop solutions to moderately complex science and engineering problems independently.
• Fielding diagnostics may be physically demanding; must be able to lift equipment weighing approximately 30 lbs. for short distances.
• Primary work location: Sandia Operations (SO) in Albuquerque, NM.
• Work schedule: 4/10's, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
• Occasional work during non-standard hours, take on-call duty, and some travel required.
• Pre-placement physical examination, including a drug screen, is required.
• Valid driver's license required.
