Job Description
Akima, LLC is seeking a Safety, Health & Environmental Manager in Herndon, VA. The role involves developing and maintaining health and safety policies, ensuring compliance with regulations, conducting inspections, and managing environmental programs. Responsibilities include training staff, responding to incidents, and interfacing with subcontractors. Candidates should have a BA in a related field with HAZWOPER certification and at least three years of relevant experience.
This person will function as the site Environmental, Health and Safety Manager for a facilities operation. Develops, implements, and maintains company policies adhering to government, installation, local, state, and Federal environmental, health and safety regulations. Involved in the design and development of work procedures and makes environmental, health and safety recommendations accordingly. Responsible for preparing, maintaining, and updating health, safety, and environmental policy and procedure manuals. Ensures compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. Serves as contact with all federal, state, and local regulatory bodies, and installation safety, health, and environmental staff. Reports to the Project Manager; functions independently with management direction and review.
Responsibilities
• Responsible for the organization’s environmental, health and safety programs for assuring compliance with Company policies, OSHA, EPA, DA, and other applicable regulations.
• Proactively identify health, safety, and environmental hazards and implement effective controls to minimize risks. Engage area supervisors in the JHA review, or new development.
• Conduct inspections of departments to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental procedures. Document inspection findings and implement effective corrective actions.
• Develop and provide training to all project staff on issues related to health, safety, and the environment (e.g., bloodborne pathogens, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, defensive driving, powered industrial trucks, personal protective equipment [PPE]).
• Manage environmental programs, such as maintaining permits, ensuring compliance with ISO 14001, and managing hazardous waste collection and satellite accumulation areas.
• Select and maintain all equipment for health, safety, and environmental protection (e.g., PPE, eye wash stations, fire extinguishers, forklifts).
• Respond to incidents related to health, safety, and the environment and notify all pertinent company and customer staff. Investigates incidents and report findings to program management causes and actions to take to prevent reoccurrences.
• Interface with subcontractors on matters related to Environmental, Health and Safety.
• Generate and submit reports related to health, safety, and environmental metrics and systems as required by management or regulation.
• Maintain all records related to safety, health, and environmental protection and as required by programs, policy, regulation, or contract clauses.
• Utilize incident reporting and other health, safety, and environmental systems as required by the Company.
• Manage employee and stakeholder engagement in the site health, safety, and environmental programs (e.g., safety committee, safety awareness program).
Qualifications
• BA degree in related field or equivalent with HAZWOPER certification (minimum 24 hour) or the ability to obtain upon hiring.
• Experience: A minimum of three years’ experience in safety, health, and environmental programs. An expert understanding of the health, safety, and environmental regulations applicable to the site.
• Five (5) years’ related field experience directing vertical construction projects in the superintendent, QC or SSHO role.
• Experience with electrical and mechanical systems is required.
• Completion of the course entitled Construction Quality Management for Contractors or ability to complete within 30 days of hire.
• Skill in the use of MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint at an intermediate level.
• Working knowledge of OSHA 1926, 1910, and USACE EM-385-1-1 regulatory requirements as it pertains to heavy industrial or commercial construction.
• Working knowledge of applicable environmental regulatory requirements.
• Completed the 30-hour OSHA Construction Safety course or ability to complete within 30 days of hire.
• A comprehensive understanding of the USACE 3-Phase Quality Control System.
Preferred Education/Training
• Engineering, architectural or construction management degree.
• BCSP Certification (OHST, CHST, ASP, CSP, etc.)
• Experience managing federal projects for clients such as US Army Corps of Engineers, US Air Force, GSA and/or NAVFAC.
Preferred Qualifications:
• 2-3 years of Facility Construction experience.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
• Experience with AR 385-10 and other DA safety, health, and environmental regulations.
• Experience with ISO 14001 compliance.
