Job Description and Duties

Under general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the Senior Environmental Scientist (Generalist) serves in a lead role on highly complex and long lead district-wide projects. This is an advanced journey-level position. In support of District 10 Local Assistance, Maintenance, Emergency, Encroachment Permit, and Planning Programs, the incumbent will prepare and review complex technical studies, analytical reports, mitigation strategies, and environmental documents to ensure accordance with scientific principles and compliance with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations, such as the National Environmental Policy Act and California Environmental Quality Act.

The position provides oversight on the most complex locally sponsored projects in District 10. The incumbent is responsible for applying scientific methods in the identification, research, consultation, analysis, and review of transportation project impacts. The incumbent is responsible for risk assessment, project pathway development, identification, and articulation of project impacts on environmental resources, and defining timelines for environmental deliverables and services. The Senior Environmental Scientist (Generalist) will advise and guide the Branch Chief, management, and other project stakeholders on environmental resource regulation, and Departmental policies and standards. The incumbent may manage consultant contracts for environmental studies and efforts associated with the project development process. The incumbent is expected to work in an independent capacity and within programs that may have significant consequences for Caltrans and its constituents. The incumbent must be solution oriented and effectively respond to customer service inquiries.
