Job DescriptionJob Description
Hazen and Sawyer’s sole focus on water, wastewater and wet weather/stormwater management leads to its participation in some of the most challenging water-related projects in the world. These projects include immense interdependencies on the natural environment. Through benefit-cost analysis, financial feasibility studies, and fiscal and environmental impact assessments, Hazen’s economists gauge the commercial, residential, agricultural, recreational, and aesthetic value of a water resource. We provide regulatory and policy evaluation and help to answer questions such as how adaptation solutions preserve or consume resources. Our economists originate from top programs in the field and specialize exclusively in water-related applied natural resource economics. We use a variety of tools - econometric modeling, economic input-output analysis, statistical methods, financial modeling, market and non-market valuation, and survey research-to estimate the economic and environmental impacts and benefits of water and natural resource management choices.
Core Responsibilities Of The Environmental/Natural Resource Economist • Identifying the economic benefits as a project’s potential multiple adaptation solutions impact the natural resource environment. • Assessing willingness-to-pay for the project’s benefits and developing economically feasible cost-sharing approaches. • Quantifying the economic impacts of solutions using economic input-output modeling • Conducting economic assessments to determine the appropriate type and scale of restoration to compensate the public for injuries to ecological, recreational, and cultural resources. • Working as part of an interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to determine water resource solutions • Conducting/managing research to develop improved, cost-effective methods and procedures for conducting benefit-cost analysis of natural resource restoration projects and projects that benefit natural resources. • Enhancing personal professional development via identifying and seeking appropriate training and participation in professional meetings. • Leading and assisting in marketing the services of Hazen’s Financial and Economic Services Group. • Leading or assisting in projects addressing asset management, utility financial analysis, and utility rate studies, as needed.
Required Qualifications Of The Environmental/Natural Resource Economist • Doctorate degree in economics, preferably in one or more of the following sub-disciplines: environmental, natural resource, agricultural economics; or environmental policy with an emphasis in quantitative economic analysis. • At least 10 years of continuous experience as a consulting economist • Strong verbal and writing skills. • Strong computer and analytical skills. • Strong presentation skills • Self-motivated, energetic, strategic thinker.
Desired Qualifications Of The Environmental/Natural Resource Economist • Experience in valuing natural resources and environmental goods and services. • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams. • Experience managing/cleaning/processing large datasets with Python, ArcGIS • Demonstrated history of research and presentation on natural resource economics topics and related work
We request that you include a COVER LETTER and a TECHNICAL WRITING SAMPLE with your application/RESUME.
