Overall Summary: The Resident Battery Engineer understands a variety of battery manufacturing and assembly processes, battery materials, and possess a deep understanding of how these materials influence the engineering and performance of our products. This role is critical to ensuring the quality, efficiency, and innovation of battery production processes.
Description:
The Resident Battery Engineer is responsible for owning the day-to-day Engineering of the battery and executing the tasks associated with the launch, new product introduction, and industrialization of new battery designs, design changes, process/part improvements, etc. Other key responsibilities include owning battery-related troubleshooting & issue resolution, overseeing the testing, implementation, documentation, and industrialization of the battery and materials used in our battery products. This position collaborates with cross-functional teams to address issues that arise from design-for-manufacturing (DFM), design-for-assembly (DFA), and design-for-service (DFS) workshops and findings. This position drives continuous improvement and innovation in battery technology.
Location: Onsite in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Key Responsibilities:
• Work closely with the research and development team on testing, documentation, and introduction of battery materials to production, to enhance performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
• Act as the single point of contact for all questions regarding the battery and its components and their specifications; effectively the liaison between the R&D team and the manufacturing team to enable rapid issue resolution and responses to questions and concerns, while allowing the R&D teams to focus on development.
• Work closely with R&D, design, supply chain, quality, field service, advanced manufacturing, and production teams to meet all needs ahead of implementation of part & material changes to the battery, in order to ensure smooth Battery new product introductions.
• Act as the voice of the advanced manufacturing, quality, field service, and production teams to aid the R&D teams in analyzing and selecting appropriate materials for battery components, including electrodes, electrolytes, and separators.
• Work closely with the quality & testing/validation teams to help develop and implement testing protocols to evaluate material properties and battery performance, and to ensure high quality, high-yield production.
• Troubleshoot and own resolution of battery and material-related issues in battery manufacturing, testing, and in the field.
• Stay updated on the latest advancements in battery materials and technology.
• Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers and team members.
Education/Experience:
• Bachelor's in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
• Five (5+) or more years of experience required.
• Proven experience in battery materials research and development required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Strong understanding of electrochemistry and battery engineering principles.
• Experience with material characterization techniques and testing methods.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
Travel
• Overnight/North America: Less than 10%
Working Conditions
• Office Environment - Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, etc. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
• Factory - The worker may be subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, vibration, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to temperature changes or exposure to chemicals. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, odors, dust, mists, and gases. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and lab coats. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
• Customer/Partner Locations – Employee may visit customer or partner locations that may be comprised of office, manufacturing floor, laboratory environments and construction sites depending on the location and reason for visit.
