Job Description
Kentucky State University is seeking a Research and Extension Associate for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems in Frankfort, KY. About the position
The Research and Extension Associate for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems will support the Principal Investigator (PI) and contribute to research and educational initiatives at the College of Agriculture, Community, and the Sciences. This role involves managing a student-run farm, establishing demonstration gardens, and promoting local food systems while providing experiential learning opportunities for students.
Responsibilities
• Assist the PI and other staff in designing farming activities and mentoring students involved in research.

• Implement Capacity Building Grant and Evans Allen research projects.
,
• Conduct collaborative and independent research to optimize production dynamics and profitability in sustainable agriculture.
,
• Manage laboratory and farm spaces professionally.
,
• Build raised beds, manage high tunnels, and assist in transplanting and monitoring production on the farm.
,
• Record and maintain data in proper spreadsheet format.
,
• Submit peer-reviewed manuscripts and give professional presentations.
,
• Develop proposals for external funding of research.
,
• Track applications and correspondence of potential graduate students and their progress.
,
• Assist faculty, staff, and students in using research equipment.
Requirements
• Master's degree in Sustainable Agriculture, Food Systems, Horticulture, Agriculture Education, Agribusiness, or a closely related field.

• Practical experience in research methodology related to sustainable food production.
,
• Experience in vegetable production and training students.
,
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team with excellent communication skills.

• Strong analytical skills, including proficiency in statistics and database analysis.
,
• Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
,
• Demonstrated expertise in agricultural and food systems.
Nice-to-haves
• Ability to obtain GAP certifications or food safety certifications.

• Experience with food safety management and/or organic agriculture.
