About the position

The Research Scientist III position at South Dakota Mines focuses on advancing convergence research, field studies, education, and outreach related to climate change and water management. The role involves developing next-generation microsensors and integrating Indigenous knowledge with advanced sensing technologies to create climate-resilient water management solutions. The candidate will conduct molecular-level research to understand contaminant-water interactions and develop intelligent monitoring systems for real-time pollutant detection.

Responsibilities
• Conduct molecular-level research to understand contaminant-water interactions under diverse climate scenarios.

• Develop advanced sensors for environmental applications, focusing on surface science and sensor optimization.
,
• Prepare grant proposals and secure funding for research projects.
,
• Engage in community outreach and educational initiatives, sharing knowledge with students and stakeholders.
,
• Foster inter-institutional and international partnerships to enhance research efforts.
,
• Guide students in conducting transformative research contributing to high-impact journal publications.

• Lead research group meetings and prepare reports and publications.

Requirements
• Ph.D. in physics, electronics, nanotechnology, or a related engineering field by the start date.

• Specialized knowledge in advanced sensors based on nano- and micro-electromechanical systems, chemical and gas sensors, and nanostructured engineering.

• Strong post-doctoral training in research related to nanomaterials in emerging sensor technologies.

• Expertise in heterostructured materials, nanoscale mechanics, and tribology, including fabrication and testing.

• Robust publication record and interdisciplinary experience in sensor technology.

Nice-to-haves
• Experience with strain-induced sensors and microsensors.

• Knowledge of surface characterization techniques such as AFM, KPFM, FFM, and Raman spectroscopy.

• Experience in electronic characterization techniques for sensor performance evaluation.
