UKGBC: who we are
UK Green Building Council is the industry network with a mission to radically transform the built environment in the face of the climate, nature crises. We champion bold government action and convene the ambitious sections of industry to drive progress at pace and scale.
This is an opportunity to play a role at the forefront of tackling the climate and nature crises and to protect communities. Nature is in collapse and our buildings and communities will not withstand the climate impacts we face without urgent action. The places we live, work and play in must, and can, be part of the solution, not the problem.
We are multi-disciplinary team of 40 passionate, skilled people from across the UK with a London office hub. As a green charity, we prize our welcoming and inclusive work culture with wellbeing and professional development at its heart.
The role
We are looking for an experienced Places Advisor to lead projects within our Regenerative Places programme, which takes a place-based approach to accelerating the shift to a sustainable built environment.
The role would suit someone with proven experience in the following: Planning, Urban design/Master planning, Stakeholder Engagement, Community-focused/led Development or innovative Regeneration projects, etc.
We are an equal-opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any protected characteristic. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone feels welcome and valued. Our commitment to inclusivity means we support flexible work arrangements, ensuring work-life balance for all. We prioritise accessibility and will gladly accommodate any needs upon request, as we believe in providing a barrier-free recruitment process.
We recognise that people of colour, those from different socio-economic backgrounds, and those from minoritised groups are currently underrepresented at all levels within the industry. We're on the lookout for talented individuals with a wide range of skills and experiences and are eager to welcome candidates from underrepresented groups.
Key responsibilities
• Support our Local Area Retrofit Accelerator (“LARA”) pilot projects with the MCS Foundation, that takes a systems-led approach to working with Local Authorities and key stakeholders in the co-creation of Local Retrofit Strategies that accelerate home retrofit
• Coordinate Places research deepening our understanding of what constitutes ‘place’ at different scales across UKGBC’s impact areas (Climate Change, Resilience & Adaptation, Nature & Biodiversity, Health, Wellbeing & Social Value), engage with key stakeholders and consider what voices may be underrepresented
• Build broader awareness and understanding of UKGBC’s emerging definition of ‘Regenerative’ as a process, rather than a metrics-based standard, and sharing insights with UKGBC’s membership and stakeholders, fostering and maintaining relationships across industry, local government, community groups, NGOs and academia. Keep up-to-date records of stakeholder engagement through Salesforce to support organisation-wide coordination and reporting
• Lead the development of case studies that explore and showcase ‘how to’ take a more regenerative approach to retrofitting our homes and communities, working with other members of the team, including those working on learning and development and systems change
• Promote the agenda - speaking at industry meetings, conferences and member events etc, and work closely with the communications team writing opinion pieces and blogs
• Project manage the full life-cycle of projects – from vision, clear objectives and timelines to monitoring and reporting on outcomes
• Contribute to team-wide strategy and planning, reporting and skills sharing
• Input into and support UKGBC’s Solutions and Innovations work
• Take accountability for your own contribution towards your personal and professional development; including regular 1-1s, objective setting, performance and development conversations; and soliciting and providing feedback, including for those outside your core work area and upward for managers.
• Engage in regular organisational wide meetings related to the UKGBC culture and operations and / or other projects and workstreams
People requirements

• Mission: A passion for tackling the climate, nature and cost of living crises, and a commitment to UKGBC’s mission.
• Integrity: An inclusive approach that conveys and embeds honesty and transparency as standard
• Attitude: A positive, proactive, problem-solving approach with demonstrable agility to perform duties that may be outside core accountabilities
• Leadership and Teamwork: Consistent and collaborative communication and engagement to help drive your team’s success, ability to motivate others and create a positive working environment
• Communication: Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex technical detail into compelling ideas and narratives in a consistently clear manner
• Project management: excellent planning, organisational, budget and time management skills that allow you to foresee issues and opportunities, think creatively to solve problems, and manage risks where not all the factors are within your control
• Administration: Strong administrative and computer literacy skills (standard software packages, mainly Microsoft Office)
• Critical thinking: supported by good research skills
• Stakeholder engagement: Powerful and effective stakeholder engagement skills and experience
• Knowledge and expertise:
• Substantial experience working in design, delivery, or development of built environment projects, including experience liaising with local authorities, engaging with community groups, and/or similar stakeholders.
