Job Description

The National Trust is hiring a Ranger in Newcastle upon Tyne to champion nature conservation and maintain the countryside and coast. Responsibilities include habitat protection, visitor engagement, and community relationship building. Applicants should have conservation experience, communication skills, and a full UK driving license. The role requires some weekend and evening work. Benefits include a pension scheme, free entry to National Trust sites, and flexible working options.
As a Ranger, you’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

You should be willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings, and be on call.

What It’s Like to Work Here

You’ll work from Gibside and across the Durham, Wear & Coast portfolio, including Souter Lighthouse & The Leas, The Durham Coast and Penshaw Monument and your atart location will depend on operational demand so a full driving licence with access to transport is essential.

Situated just outside Gateshead, this 18th century landscape garden and wildlife haven is loved by the local community. Weekly activities, play trails, and an adventure playground have made Gibside popular with families, and visitor numbers have doubled in the last five years. The lively pub and beer garden offers local ales, comfort food and a play space for the kids. The staff welcome people with lots of energy to join this friendly garden landscape, situated on the edge of the city.
