Job Description
The National University of Singapore's Energy Studies Institute is hiring a Research Fellow specializing in energy economics and policy. The role involves conducting research on energy transition and carbon mitigation policies, requiring a PhD and at least 2 years of relevant experience. Candidates should possess skills in quantitative/qualitative analysis, and familiarity with Singapore's economic system is preferred. This position is based in Singapore and is not remote.
Energy Studies Institute
The Energy Studies Institute (ESI) is a research institute at the National University of Singapore seeking to advance the understanding of energy policy issues by conducting independent research and analysis. We are looking for researchers to join a multi-disciplinary team carrying out research projects on a range of energy issues that are of concern to Singapore and the region.
The Institute is looking to recruit a researcher with expertise in energy economics and policy at the rank of Research Fellow. The appointed staff will operate under the responsibility of the Institute Head and work closely with all members across each of the institute’s divisions.
Candidates are expected to be highly familiar with:
• climate change and decarbonisation issues; and
• quantitative or qualitative analysis methods.
An understanding of Singapore's economic system and local work experience is desirable.
Job Description
The specific area of work will depend on the priorities of the institute at any given point in time. In the near term, to support ongoing and expanding future research within the institute, the appointed candidate will be expected to commit to analysing various energy transition and carbon mitigation policies. Examples of priority areas include:
• Comparative evaluation of renewable energy deployment policies and potential;
• Economic and geopolitical analysis of energy supply chain and energy supply security;
• Assessment of carbon pricing and carbon markets.
The above list is not exhaustive, moreover, at any given point in time the institute undertakes multiple projects in parallel and opportunity will exist to participate in a variety of workstreams that align with your interests.
Job Requirements
• Possess a PhD degree in economics, public policy, international relations, political science, law or other related fields, with specific application to energy, environmental or climate issues.
• Relevant work experience of a minimum 2 years, preferably in academia, consulting or in policy review and formulation.
• Applicants should have demonstrated experience in quantitative and/or qualitative policy analysis and are expected to have an adequate understanding of various econometric methodologies. Expected skillsets include one of the following:
• Econometric methods for causal inference;
• Data science and machine learning;
• Survey design and analysis;
• Qualitative analysis skills specialized in policy and geopolitics
• A good contemporary understanding and interest in energy technologies and issues. Expected areas could include but are not limited to:
• Biofuels;
• Nuclear energy;
• Geothermal;
• Energy storage
• Relevant working and practical experience in industry or government agencies in the area of energy and environment would be valuable.
• Track record of publications in reputable journals would be an advantage.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Have a strong written and oral command of the English language.
