Job Description

San Bernardino County is seeking a Public Health Environmental Technician I to support environmental regulatory programs. The role involves processing permit applications, investigating complaints, and maintaining data related to public health. Applicants must be current county employees and possess a valid California driver’s license. The position offers health benefits, paid time off, and a pension plan. This job is not remote and requires physical presence in San Bernardino, CA.
This recruitment is only open to current San Bernardino County, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District or Special Districts employees who hold a regular, contract, extra-help, recurrent, Public Service Employee, Work Experience Program (WEX) or intern position.

The Department of Public Health (DPH), Environmental Health Services (EHS) Division, is recruiting an Environmental Technician I to support environmental regulatory programs and help safeguard public health. This role involves performing a variety of technical tasks, such as processing permit applications for food facilities, body art establishments, pools, spas, housing, and water wells. Additional responsibilities include investigating complaints, such as reports of foodborne illnesses and referring them to the appropriate office and/or agency. Environmental Technicians also provide information on environmental health programs and regulations. Other duties may involve recording and maintaining data related to soil characteristics, percolation rates, and the bacteriological and chemical analysis of water wells.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Physical Requirements: May require lifting items weighing up to twenty (20) pounds, in addition to bending, kneeling, and stooping.

Travel/License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

Experience: Six (6) months of full-time equivalent experience explaining program related regulations and requirements to the public in an Environmental Health, Code Enforcement, other DPH program/division/section, or other public sector agency program/department setting, with experience in any of the following:
• Processing applications for permits, licenses, certifications, and/or other closely related government regulated documents and/or records.
• Performing surveillance and inspection duties in Environmental Health programs.
• Assisting with food facilities, recreation (public swimming pools), insect and rodent vector control, or land use inspections.
