About the position

KCI Technologies, Inc. is seeking a Project Scientist to join our Ecological Restoration group, located in either Sparks, MD or Fulton, MD. This position is part of our Natural Resource Practice, which is dedicated to providing innovative solutions in environmental, natural resource, and water resource management. As a Project Scientist, you will play a crucial role in leading geomorphological assessments, conducting sediment sampling, and developing detailed engineering designs for stream restoration projects. Your work will involve utilizing advanced technologies and methodologies to create 3D surface models in MicroStation or AutoCAD Civil3D, as well as developing conceptual designs and reports that articulate various alternatives for ecological restoration.

Responsibilities
• Lead geomorphological assessments including non-datum survey, photo documentation, and sediment sampling.

• Build 3D surfaces in MicroStation or AutoCAD Civil3D to accurately represent existing and proposed surfaces.
,
• Develop conceptual designs and reports articulating alternatives and reflecting them via ArcGIS or MicroStation.
,
• Create detailed engineering stream restoration designs including plans, reports, specifications, and engineer's estimates.
,
• Estimate credits based on the Bay Protocols for Urban Stream Restoration.
,
• Estimate functional feet and buffer credits using the Maryland Stream Mitigation Framework.
,
• Determine design discharge and perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling.
,
• Oversee construction and post-construction performance monitoring, including the development of as-built and monitoring reports.

Requirements
• Minimum of 6 years professional experience related to ecological restoration and stream assessment for natural and urbanized channels.
,
• Demonstrated understanding of fluvial geomorphology principles and processes and restoration methodologies for freshwater and tidal ecosystems.
,
• Strong independent work, organizational ability, regular communication, and time management skills.
,
• Experience performing geomorphic assessments and restoration design in the Mid-Atlantic region.
,
• Ability to organize and write technical assessment and design reports documenting approach, findings, and recommendations.
,
• Proficiency in MicroStation or AutoCAD, including the ability to build 3D surfaces of existing and proposed conditions.
,
• Ability to prepare engineers' cost estimates and specifications.
,
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
,
• Ability to work in a team environment with individuals in other geographies.
,
• Ability to travel to job sites and perform field work in various weather conditions.

Nice-to-haves
• Ability to perform Hydrology & Hydraulics (H&H) analysis using TR-55 and TR-20; and HEC-RAS or other programs accepted by regulatory agencies.

• Ability to perform and document Protocol computations for Sediment and Nutrient load reductions and equivalent impervious acre credits.

• Experience in State, Federal, and Local permitting.
