Who We Are
Founded in 2015, The
Department of Media Studies is one of seven units comprising
the University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Media,
Communication, and Information (CMCI). With 13 full-time faculty,
±25 graduate students (MA and PhD), and approximately 150
undergraduate majors (and growing), the department is an
established leader in media studies research and teaching. Its
unique blend of theory and practice, scholarly inquiry and public
engagement, and humanistic and social-scientific approaches has
yielded both a vibrant intellectual environment and a cohesive
departmental community.
CU’s Department of Media Studies is enriched by resources you’ll
find nowhere else in the world, including: the Media Archaeology Lab
(MAL) , one of the largest collections of still-functioning
media from the 19th century to the early-21st century; the Center for Media, Religion, and
Culture (CMRC) , a multidisciplinary community committed to
understanding religious experience in and beyond the digital age;
Cultural
Studies , a discipline-defining scholarly journal, founded
in 1987; the Media
Economies Design Lab (MEDLab) , whose participants explore
pathways for democratic ownership and governance in the online
economy; and the newly-founded Visual Evidence Lab, which engages
academics and broader constituencies for public good to ensure that
legal and institutional stakeholders consider the power and
limitations of visual technologies in decision-making.
Established in 2015, the University of Colorado Boulder College of
Media, Communication and Information is at the forefront of the
revolution in communication, digital technology and design. CMCI
prides itself on offering students an interdisciplinary education
with a focus on innovation and creativity. Our students and faculty
from six departments, an independent PhD program and the recently
integrated program in environmental design think across boundaries,
innovate around emerging problems and create culture that
transcends convention.
CMCI strives to be a community whose excellence is premised on
diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek candidates who share this
dedication and demonstrate understanding of the experiences of
those historically underrepresented in higher education. We welcome
applications from minoritized racial and ethnic identities,
ciswomen, non-normative genders and sexualities, persons with
disabilities, and others who have encountered legacies of
marginalization.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Responsibilities will be split between research (40%),
teaching/mentorship (40%), and service to the department,
university, and profession (20%). The standard teaching load is
2-2. In addition to teaching existing courses in the department,
you will be asked to develop courses in your area of expertise. You
will have an opportunity to work with undergraduate and graduate
students in the department.
What You Should Know
As a colleague in the Department of Media Studies, you will be
working within an environment that is committed to rigorous
scholarship, critical pedagogy, and intellectual and creative
engagement, one that celebrates traditional forms of intellectual
inquiry and other equally-profound models and road maps of
knowledge pursuit. As a relatively small and tight-knit department,
Media Studies depends on faculty who value collegiality and
community.
The campus has implemented a
reference check program with respect to final candidates for
tenured faculty appointments. The reference check program is
intended to allow CU Boulder to collect and review information
about a candidate's conduct at their previous institutions,
specifically conduct related to sexual misconduct, harassment,
and/or discrimination – before making hiring decisions. All final
candidates for tenured faculty appointments are required to
complete an Authorization to Release Information.
