A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer As a Principal Engineer, you will be guiding our team to create sustainable multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from complex roadways and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You will assist the Silver Spring Civil Engineering Group Manager and/or the Regional Design Director by independently managing and leading company projects in the Mid-Atlantic region.

You'll be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, delivering projects from concept to construction; including stakeholder outreach and charrettes, developing feasibility studies and concept plans, and preparing construction documents for innovative projects in your home region as well as supporting projects across our North American offices. You will also be participating in business development and project pursuits, and playing a key role in the firm's quality initiatives.

In an industry that is constantly changing, you'll be at the forefront of delivering creative solutions to challenging projects.

Qualifications of a Principal Engineer:

A Professional Engineering license in MD (other Mid-Atlantic states a plus)
A bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering

At least 15 years of engineering experience developing construction documents and/or public agency construction administration

At least 5 years serving in a project and/or design management role A broad knowledge base in civil engineering, with specific experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling and design of accessible public spaces

A proven track record of past performance delivering multiple large/complex projects on time and on budget

Experience developing construction documents

Experience in preparing transportation and local agency permit documents

General experience leading multidisciplinary teams, coordinating utility and right-of-way impacts, street lighting, traffic signal, and landscape/hardscape layout

Interest in multimodal and active transportation design Experience in managing staff

Proficiency in Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD or Micro Station) and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads) Experience managing engineering projects in the State of Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic Experience in preparing proposals and scope/fees Interest in business development
