Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Sustainability

Description:The University of Notre Dame announces a post-doctoral research fellow opportunity, beginning October 15, 2025 and focusing on "A Global Synthesis of Socioecological Contexts of Artisanal and Small-scale Mining." The position is meant to advance research on the multidimensional outcomes of small-scale mining through the production of a global synthesis, and work towards a just transformation of global economies and consumers. To date, no such synthesis exists.

The postdoctoral scholar will (1) assemble and manage a diverse group of research experts and implement the process of developing a global synthesis on ASM, (2) plan and execute at least two summits convening all contributors together, (3) lead in the writing of the final document, which is intended to be a high impact research article in a journal such as Nature or Science, and (4) collaborate with the PIs to source extramural funding to support this work through grant writing and other activities.

In addition to these duties, the postdoctoral scholar will have the opportunity to collaborate on the mining related work ongoing in Madre de Dios, Peru, generating their own and project related empirical data. This will promote the postdoctoral scholar's possibilities for producing additional original research. The postdoctoral scholar will also have numerous opportunities to engage the intellectual community of Keough faculty and postdoctoral scholars, as well as those in the Environmental Change Initiative.

This is a full-time position available with an initial appointment of one-year, renewable for an additional year on the basis of satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate for this position will have expertise and interests in one or more of the following areas: integration of diverse datasets, robust statistical inference, and causal inference through statistical analysis, and strong team coordination capacities.

A PhD in Geography, Environmental Science or Studies, Natural Resources, Economics, Climate Science, Sustainability Science, Political Science, Data Sciences or a related field is required at the time of appointment.
