Description
We are seeking creative, collaborative postdoctoral scholars to advance our work on advancing resilient climate solutions for agriculture and water sustainability. Research will be highly data-driven, through quantitative investigations and spatial model development.
Primarily under the guidance of Dr. Lorenzo Rosa, fellows will collaboratively design and conduct cutting-edge research, publish results in peer-reviewed journals, and present results at scientific conferences.
Our research focuses on assessing the potential benefits and unintended climate and environmental consequences of innovations engineered to satisfy the increasing global demand for food, energy, and water. Emphasizing sustainable solutions to balance resource demands and enhance environmental resiliency, we study innovative technologies to tackle climate mitigation and adaptation within the interconnected food-energy-water nexus. There will be flexibility regarding scientific questions to be studied, but potential areas of focus include:
• Quantifying climate change impacts on water resources
• Advancing agricultural water management for sustainable water and food security
• Mapping agricultural green, blue and economic water scarcity under climate change
• Assessing water scarcity exposure at the asset level for energy technologies and emerging technologies
• Analyzing solutions to water scarcity under global warming, including water storage, crop switching, water transfers, wastewater reuse, and desalination
• Quantifying how agriculture will be impacted by climate change and how farmers can adapt to new conditions
• Assessing low-carbon fertilizers for resilient and sustainable agriculture
• Assessing solutions to achieve net-zero emissions in agriculture
Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to lead projects and assist with others; peer-reviewed publication of results in high-quality journals is the norm. Fellows should demonstrate that helping the group be successful is a key element in their own career pathway.
Postdoctoral Fellows have access to valuable research resources to launch successful scientific careers in academia and industry. Research resources include technical support staff, research equipment, and computing/IT resources. We seek to provide a culture of mentoring and professional development for all postdoctoral scientists; additional professional development/training programs are offered internally.
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in any scientific or engineering discipline with a grounding in hydrology, water resources, agriculture, energy, earth and environmental science, or related field;
• Analyses of large spatio-temporal datasets;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Strong quantitative analysis skills;
• Evidence of ability to work independently and in teams;
• Commitment to a collegial workplace.
Application Instructions
Multiple positions are available with flexible start dates. Although initial appointments are for one year, the position is renewable and postdocs in the Rosa Lab usually stay for two to three years. Carnegie offers competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits. Applicants are required to submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, a statement of postdoc research, and the names and contact information of three professional references. Please contact Lorenzo Rosa (e-mail: lrosa@carnegiescience.edu) with any questions about the position.
