Job Description
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct high-resolution climate and weather modeling, focusing on convective systems and their environmental influences. The role involves model simulations, development, analysis of datasets, and publishing findings, requiring a PhD in Atmospheric or Climate Science, strong modeling skills, and programming expertise. Collaboration with a scientific team is essential. This is a full-time position based in Lemont, IL.
The Environmental Science Division at the Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to conduct model simulations with high-resolution global and regional climate models. The position focuses on analyzing convective systems and weather extremes to understand their predictability and how they are influenced by environmental factors such as urbanization, aerosols, and climate change.
In this role, you will lead model simulations of convective systems with high-resolution regional and global models, evaluate these simulations, and investigate the impact of environmental factors on convective systems and precipitation. Key responsibilities include conducting high-resolution model simulations, contributing to model development, analyzing both model results and observational datasets, and publishing research findings. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with scientists within a team.
Position Requirements
Required skills and experience:
• Completed PhD (typically completed within the last 0-5 years) in Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, or other climate-related science
• Expertise in any of the following: cloud and convection, severe weather, land-atmosphere interactions, impacts of urbanization on precipitation, and aerosol-cloud interactions
• Strong modeling skills and high-performance computing experience
• Experience with model code development, and strong programming skills (e.g., Fortran and Python)
• Knowledge of data analytics and statistical methods
• Demonstrated strong scientific writing skills and oral communication
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team member, be creative and innovative, and multitask
• Ability to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork
Preferred skills and experience:
• AI/ML model developments for earth system science
• C++ programming skills and model simulations on GPUs
• E3SM, CESM, and WRF model experience
