The City of Portland, Maine is hiring a Planner for the Department of Planning & Urban Development. The role involves reviewing development proposals, managing planning initiatives, and ensuring compliance with municipal regulations. Candidates should have strong project management and communication skills, with a preference for those holding a master’s degree in planning. The position offers a flexible hybrid schedule of two remote and three in-office days per week.
PLANNER

Department of Planning & Urban Development -

The Department of Planning and Urban Development plans for the future vitality, livability, and prosperity of one of the most dynamic cities in the northeast.

The Department’s work involves overseeing and directing all planning and urban development activities including: comprehensive planning, implementing and amending the City’s zoning and land use policies, site plan, subdivision, and historic preservation ordinances, design review, management of the City’s Public Art program, transportation planning, and other long range planning projects.

We are seeking candidates for a planner position to conduct development review and to undertake planning initiatives for the sustained growth and vitality of Portland, Maine. This position is primarily focused on reviewing applications for new development proposals, but will also include the opportunity to contribute to the long-range planning and policy initiatives of the department related to zoning changes, housing policy, transportation, sustainability, and more. Tasks involve review of development projects for compliance with municipal regulations and design guidelines, including but not limited to zoning, site plan, subdivision and historic preservation ordinances. The position also requires skills in project management, policy analysis and community engagement. Excellent written and oral communication skills required. GIS, graphic design, and other analytical software a plus.

Planners are offered a flexible hybrid schedule of two remote/three in-office days per week. Municipal planning experience and master’s degree in planning or closely related field or equivalent combination preferred. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.

Pro-Tech Union position – Grade 8 - Annual Salary $60,177 to $69,751.76. Additionally, a 6% differential will be paid upon presentation to the City of State of Maine certification as a Landscape Architect, certification from the American Institute of Certified Planner as a Certified Planner, or American Institute of Architects as a Certified Architect.
