PhD studentship: Intersections in Medical and Environmental History

Newcastle University offers a PhD studentship in Intersections in Medical and Environmental History. Interested in the intersection between medical and environmental history after 1700? This PhD will allow the successful candidate the opportunity to develop a project which can help us understand current issues in environmental and health using the lens of the past. Themes which may shape this PhD could include, but are not limited to, green urban infrastructure and health; conceptions of the rural as ‘healthy’; hospital design; atmospheres; travel for health; sport and exercise; explorations of changing ideas of ‘nature’ in relation to health; sensory interactions between the body and the environment. This is an exciting opportunity to work with Dr Clare Hickman who has recently led a Wellcome Trust funded network called MedEnv: Intersections in Medical and Environmental Humanities’ and be based within the School of History, Classics and Archaeology where there are strong interests in associated themes such as environmental justice as well as wider Newcastle University initiatives in Medical Humanities, Landscape, Climate and Resilience and Cities.

Lead supervisor will be Clare Hickman with other members of the team to be appointed based on the expertise needed to support the chosen topic.
Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should hold a 1st class or high 2:1 degree in History or an equivalent subject, and should hold, or expect to achieve by September 2024, an MA with distinction (or international equivalent) in History or a related field.

This award is available to home candidates only (UK and EU applicants with pre-settled/settled status and meet the residency criteria).
