Job Description
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking PhD interns for a 10-week paid summer internship in Renewable Energy Technologies, based in Honolulu, HI. Interns will engage in research on energy efficiency, grid modernization, and the integration of renewable energy. Responsibilities include collaborating with experts on projects in power systems, energy analytics, building sciences, and policy. Overview
Join an innovative research team at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and contribute to solving urgent energy and environmental challenges. As part of our Energy and Environment Directorate, you'll play a vital role in modernizing the power grid and advancing renewable energy technologies for a more sustainable future.
This internship provides a fantastic opportunity to work alongside experts in the Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division. Engage in essential research areas such as energy efficiency, grid modernization, and the smooth integration of renewable energy sources, storage solutions, and electric vehicles into the power grid.
Responsibilities
We are looking for enthusiastic PhD students ready to gain hands-on research experience. Our 10-week paid summer internship, part of the Energy and Environment Internship Program (EEIP), commences on May 26, 2026 or June 19, 2026. You'll be paired with a mentor and join a project group focusing on one of the following exciting fields:
• Power Systems Engineering: Explore grid architecture, communications, modeling, simulation, and security.
• Energy System Analytics and Control: Work with analytics, control theory, optimization, and advanced computing.
• Building System Sciences & Engineering: Assist with building energy modeling, electrical systems design, and optimization strategies.
• Policy, Markets and Deployment: Engage in market design, economic analysis, and planning for energy transitions.
This internship will enhance your research experience, provide valuable professional development, and allow you to network with distinguished scientists and engineers at PNNL. Many of our interns transition into full-time roles at PNNL post-graduation.
