Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is offering a PhD Internship in Renewable Energy Research based in Topeka, KS. This 10-week paid summer program allows interns to engage in research on energy efficiency, electric grid modernization, and the integration of renewable energy technologies. Interns will work alongside experts, gain hands-on experience, and have opportunities for professional development and networking, with potential for future employment at PNNL.
Overview

Join a dynamic and innovative research team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and make a difference by addressing critical energy and environmental challenges. As part of our Energy and Environment Directorate, you will play an essential role in modernizing the power grid and advancing renewable energy technologies for a sustainable future.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with experts in the Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division. You will delve into crucial research areas such as energy efficiency, electric grid modernization, and the seamless integration of renewable energy sources, storage solutions, and electric vehicles into the power grid.

Responsibilities

We welcome enthusiastic PhD students eager to gain valuable hands-on research experience. Our 10-week paid summer internship, part of the Energy and Environment Internship Program (EEIP), begins on May 26, 2026 or June 19, 2026. You will be paired with a mentor and assigned to a project group focused on one of the following exciting areas:
• Power Systems Engineering: Dive into grid architecture, communications, modeling, simulation, and security.
• Energy System Analytics and Control: Engage with analytics, control theory, optimization, and advanced computing.
• Building System Sciences & Engineering: Contribute to building energy modeling, electrical systems design, and optimization strategies.
• Policy, Markets and Deployment: Participate in market design, economic analysis, and planning for energy transitions.

This internship will boost your research experience, foster valuable professional development opportunities, and allow you to network with renowned scientists and engineers at PNNL. Many of our interns successfully transition to full-time roles at PNNL after graduation.
