JOB TITLE: Sustainability Assistant
REPORTS TO: Vice President of Providence
SUPERVISES: N/A
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt/Part-Time
DATE: September 2023

MISSION FOCUS: Support the mission of Second Harvest Food Bank by coordinating streams of waste (garbage, compost (2 types), and recyclables (multi stream) to their correct removal location by supervising volunteers in the presorting of bio matter, overseeing the use and maintenance of the various equipment sets involved and reporting totals for calculation monthly.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Receive excess bio matter from the operations team for processing through the product separator.
• Coordinating the sorting of the above product into streams considering packaging type and its recyclability using volunteers to help sort.
• Run batches of packaged bio matter through the separator as needed and use forward dumper attachment on a forklift to place into collection bins for pick up by Organix.
• Clean and maintain product separator as needed.
• Oversee colored collection bins on warehouse rail and coordinate their removal to the proper outside collection receptacles at the disposal dock area.
• Clean and maintain colored bins.
• Clean compactor area weekly.
• Collect poundage data for waste streams as assigned.
• Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work area at all times
• Participate in other Food Bank duties and activities as assigned
• Provide training and oversight for volunteers assigned to this area

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
• Commitment to the vision, mission and values of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC
• Good communication skills
• Excellent math skills
• Able to work in a team environment
• Drug testing and criminal background check required for employment
• Availability to work some evenings and Saturdays as needed
• Ability to perform duties in accordance with Second Harvest Food Bank’s Safety Policies
• Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• Able to work with a diverse group of people
• Able to maintain harmonious relationships with volunteers

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Able to lift up to sixty pounds without assistance
• Able to tolerate intermittent work inside walk-in coolers maintained at 35 degrees or below
• Able to operate warehouse equipment including pallet jacks, forklifts, etc.
• Able to read scale weights and record them correctly
• Able to walk, sit, stoop, squat, etc. frequently
• Able to stand for long periods of time occasionally
• Visual acuity to perform job duties
