About the position

The Organizer for Philadelphia Climate Works at the Sierra Club plays a crucial role in advancing the organization's mission to promote climate justice and environmental sustainability in Philadelphia. This position is designed to support the implementation of the Philadelphia Climate Works (PCW) Program, which aims to build a more just, equitable, and resilient city through a strong, diverse, and broad-based climate justice movement. The Organizer will work under the direction of the PCW Program Manager and will be instrumental in fostering collaboration among community organizations, home repair providers, workforce and community development partners, and climate justice groups. The overarching goal is to advocate for safe, healthy, affordable, and fossil-free housing for all residents of Philadelphia. In this role, the Organizer will be responsible for growing the PCW network and the HERE 4 Climate Justice coalition, which is a collaborative effort focused on addressing climate, social, and environmental justice issues. This includes building relationships with new and existing partners, coordinating grassroots involvement, and developing engagement strategies that resonate with the community. The Organizer will also engage in administrative advocacy, making presentations to community groups and governmental bodies, and creating various public-facing materials to keep stakeholders informed about PCW campaigns and issues. Additionally, the Organizer will assist the Program Manager with coalition operations, including scheduling and facilitating meetings, reporting back on results, and helping with logistics for events. Setting outcome and process goals in consultation with the Program Manager will be essential, as will establishing indicators to evaluate the progress and impact of the organizing program. The role may also involve miscellaneous duties as directed, including administrative and clerical tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Responsibilities
• Grow the PCW network and HERE 4 Climate Justice coalition by building relationships with community and coalition partners.

• Recruit, coordinate, and facilitate grassroots involvement in the coalitions.
,
• Develop and implement engagement strategies, both online and face-to-face, to expand networks.
,
• Perform administrative advocacy to build support for policies and programs related to climate justice.
,
• Make presentations to community groups and governmental bodies regarding PCW campaigns and issues.
,
• Write press releases, newsletters, flyers, petitions, fact sheets, and other public-facing materials.
,
• Conduct research and consultation on emerging issues of interest to the coalition.
,
• Assist the Program Manager with coalition operations, including scheduling and facilitating meetings.
,
• Set outcome and process goals in consultation with the Program Manager and establish indicators to evaluate progress.

• Perform miscellaneous duties as directed, including administrative and clerical tasks.

Requirements
• Experience working on advocacy in the environmental justice or social justice field, including research and organizing campaigns.

• Basic knowledge of issues related to environmental, racial, economic, housing, and gender justice in Philadelphia.
,
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, including producing written materials and excellent verbal communication.
,
• Strong ability to network, build trust, and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups.
,
• Proficient computer skills, including online facilitation and social media.
,
• Strong equity analysis and practice, with awareness of group identities and their impact on experiences.

Nice-to-haves
• Basic understanding of clean energy and climate policy, especially related to environmental injustice and decarbonization of buildings.

• Existing relationships with climate justice movement organizations in Philadelphia.
