Job Description

The Ohio State University seeks an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist 3 in Columbus, OH. Responsibilities include conducting job hazard assessments, safety audits, and training on safety topics. Department:Administration and Planning | FOD Environmental Health and Safety

This position holds the following responsibilities in support of the department’s mission, vision and values:

General
• Performing job hazard assessments and analyses, noise and dosimetry monitoring, ergonomic/workstation assessments and respiratory fit testing.
• Coordinating, conducting and reporting on safety audits and inspections of university operations.
• Creates, conducts and tracks EHS training for employees on topics such as lockout tagout, confined spaces, fall protection, and other occupational health and safety topics.
• Investigates safety and environmental incidents including near misses.
• Provides recommendations for improvements and prevention of future incidents.
• Works independently to development of safety processes and procedures.
• Provides technical consultation to university departments and provides assistance to all areas of Environmental Health and Safety
• Provides guidance and cross training to less experienced colleagues.
• Creates and distributes written documentation including reports and safety guidance documents.
• Participates as a member of the EHS Emergency Response Team; subject to 24-hour call-in response to emergency situations.

Supports the industrial hygiene program
• Assists with chemical hazard and workplace exposure monitoring; provides assistance with laboratory exposure control. Acting as a representative of Environmental Health and Safety in interactions with the campus community.
• Conducts complex indoor air quality assessments. Works with HVAC and mechanical engineering staff to evaluate ventilation to ensure appropriate indoor air quality parameters are met. This may include gathering air samples for contaminants like mold or dust, evaluating the results, and making recommendations for remediation or control of the air quality issues. Reviews data and reports of others for accuracy.
• Calibrates and maintains industrial hygiene and emergency response equipment.
• Routinely reviews regulatory changes and emerging technologies for impacts to safety programs and industrial hygiene standards. Recommends changes to university programs, policies and building design standards.

Safety Program Development and Implementation
• Applies industry knowledge and leverages internal resources to develop and implement safety programs. This may include but is not limited to kitchen safety, archive and library safety and event and entertainment safety.
• Evaluates existing safety programs and makes updates according to regulation changes.
• Coordinates the university shop safety audit/inspection program. Collects and analyzes data from the program to provide recommendations to the department on program improvements. Creates and reports on metrics on a monthly and annual basis.
• Evaluates regulations for training requirements to determine university employee training needs. Conducts gap analysis and develops annual safety training calendars. Coordinates training as appropriate.
• Provides technical support to facilities safety program. This includes having knowledge to help workers identify hazards and prevent accidents.

Working hours are 7:30 am to 4:30 pm M-F. Requires participation in medical surveillance program, including clearance for wearing respiratory protection. Requires appropriate security clearances as determined by regulation and the University. This position requires completion of a criminal background check.

Standing, walking, sitting, typing, carrying, pushing, bending. Work is conducted in both an indoor office setting as well as outside field work. Environmental conditions will vary.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of relevant experience.

Desired Qualifications
• Associate Safety Professional and/or Certified Safety Professional
• Competent in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation creation software.
• Experience with EHS data management systems
• 4 years of relevant experience in Occupational Health and Safety.
• Advanced understanding of federal, state, local, and applicable rules and regulations as it relates to safety and health.
• Experience preparing reports and professional correspondence, including the ability to draft, edit, and produce a variety of documents such as: data analysis, training manuals, and compliance reports.
• This position will require Fall Protection Competent Person training to be completed within six months of employment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to provide training programs and speak to large audiences.
