Job Description
The Northern California Program Co-Director at Communities for a Better Environment in Oakland, CA, oversees the organization's work in East Oakland, focusing on campaign strategy, leadership development, and staff management. Responsibilities include coordinating with various departments, developing community campaigns, and participating in fundraising and budget management. The role requires significant experience in environmental justice and grassroots organizing, along with strong communication and leadership skills.
General Position Summary:
This position reports to the Associate Director and is responsible for overseeing CBE’s work in East Oakland. This includes campaign strategy, leadership development, networking, movement building and coordinating with CBE’s Development and Finance departments on program grants and funds. The Program Director has the duty and privilege of working with CBE’s diverse staff in the Organizing, Research and Legal departments to ensure the integrated program strategy that makes CBE the unique and successful force it has been in the Environmental Justice movement. The NorCal Program Co-Director supervises East Oakland’s Organizers and Program Staff. The Program Director is also part of CBE’s dynamic statewide Admin Team that facilitates the organization’s growth and development.
• RESPONSIBILITIES
• Staff Management and Development
- Supervise and support the sustainability and growth of the organizing and program staff.
- Hire, manage, and develop program staff in East Oakland.
- Help lead and participate in organizational equity work and ensure organizing and program staff are involved in this work.
• Organizing and Campaign Coordination
- Oversee and coordinate East Oakland Team which includes organizers, researchers, legal and development staff.
- Work with Nor Cal Program Co-Director in Richmond to coordinate organizing efforts in Nor Cal.
- Help develop, implement, and participate in key campaign and coalition activities as needed.
- Develop and oversee structures and processes such as CBE’s transformative organizing model.
- Lead campaign and department planning and evaluation processes.
- Support roll out and integration of C4 work in organizing department.
- Ensure accountability and coordination between community members and the organization.
- Participate in CBE Policy team to coordinate regional/statewide policy activities with organizers
- Communicate with So Cal Program Directors to connect on organizing programs and building connections across communities.
- Build relationships with partners in alliances and coalitions.
• Finance and Development
- Participate in Funder team and contribute to proposals, reports, and fundraising activities.
- Participate in the organization’s Admin Team.
- Track and approve budgets and financial disbursements for organizing campaigns an d programs.
• EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Demonstrated commitment to environmental and climate justice and experience working with low-income communities of color.
- Expertise in grassroots community, youth or labor organizing, with at least 5 years of experience.
- Minimum 5 years of management experience, including supervision and leadership development of multiple staff.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in planning, implementing and evaluating community-based environmental or social justice campaigns and programs.
- Familiarity with regulatory processes, especially city-wide policies and California state legislation.
- Experience with fundraising.
- Highly skilled in group facilitation, public speaking and presentation.
- Team and consensus-building skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong people skills, be community friendly and have the ability to engage a broad spectrum of people representing various social, cultural and professional backgrounds.
- High accuracy, attention to detail, organization and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- Strong supervision and conflict resolution skills.
- Strong time management skills.
- Ability to ensure a positive, team-oriented environment.
- Ability to understand and navigate a complex political environment.
- Experience relationship-building within Black communities, along with an understanding of the historical obstacles these communities have faced.
• Benefits and Compensation
This is a full-time, non-exempt position, with an annual salary of $111,813 and an average expected work week of around 40 hours. The Northern California Program Co-Director will receive CBE’s comprehensive benefits package, including a generous vacation and leave policy (30 days of paid leave in the first year, including holidays); fully-paid premiums for medical, vision, and dental insurance; an additional mental health benefit; a 401(k) retirement plan; and a flexible spending plan. CBE pays full premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee, spouse or domestic partner, and any dependents.
